Michael Carrick Testimonial: Team News, Live-Stream, TV Info for 2017 Friendly

Matt JonesJun 2, 2017

Manchester United will pay tribute to veteran midfielder Michael Carrick on Sunday, when football icons will gather at Old Trafford for his testimonial.

The 35-year-old signed for the Red Devils in 2006 and has been a mainstay of the United midfield since. During his time with the club, Carrick has won five Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup; even now, he remains a key part of manager Jose Mourinho's setup.

So it's no surprise so many big names will be in attendance for this one, including United legends Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand. For the opponents—Michael Carrick All-Stars—Clarence Seedorf, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard will take to the field.

Although Carrick has never taken up too many column inches during his time at United, the midfield man has always been cherished by the majority of the Old Trafford crowd. This will be a chance for those who frequent this iconic stadium to sound their appreciation.

"Michael is a phenomenal person and a true professional," Mourinho told the club's official website. "He gives stability in our game and mental freedom to the other guys around him to be more attacking. He has a big understanding of the game and is a great role model for our younger players."

The deep-lying playmaker agreed a new one-year contract recently. Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News thinks the United No. 16 still has an important role to play at the club:

Carrick's finest achievement came in 2008, when United won the Champions League. The club has sought to bring together as many members of that team as possible, as we can see here:

The man overseeing the United side on that night and on Sunday is Red Devils legend Sir Alex Ferguson, who helped Carrick develop into one of most consistent midfielders in the country.

And while supporters will be delighted to see skipper Wayne Rooney in action, it's always intriguing to see how men like Scholes, Giggs, Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic will fare on their return to the Old Trafford turf.

Patrice Evra, who plies his trade for Olympique de Marseille, is excited to play at Old Trafford again, too:

There will be a chance for the United supporters to jeer some former enemies, too, as football writer Paul Ansorge noted:

Carrick discussed why he invited former Liverpool and England skipper Gerrard to take part:

There will be some big names from the continent, too. Seedorf has shown he's still got it in these types of matches in the past, while Gaizka Mendieta and Eric Abidal are other renowned players scheduled to take part. They'll be managed by Harry Redknapp, who worked with Carrick at West Ham United.

While competition will no doubt flare between some old enemies, the tone of the day will be undoubtedly light-hearted. And Carrick's testimonial is set to raise plenty of money for the Michael Carrick Foundation.

"Also benefiting will be projects of the Manchester United Foundation, which works across some of the most deprived areas of Greater Manchester, using the passion for the club to help and inspire youngsters," the official Red Devils website noted.
