Otto Porter Reportedly Offered Max Contract Offer Sheet by Kings

Rob GoldbergJul 2, 2017

The Sacramento Kings reportedly offered Washington Wizards restricted free-agent Otto Porter a max offer sheet.

Chris Haynes and Marc J. Spears of ESPN reported the news Sunday. They added that the offer is in the "range of four years and approximately $100 million," noting Porter "has not made a decision yet as he has more meetings to take."

If Porter signs the deal, the Wizards would have two days to match the offer sheet if they want to keep him on the roster. Candace Buckner of the Washington Post has continued to hear the Wizards will match the offer, making him the highest-paid player on the team.

Porter dramatically improved in each of his four seasons after being the third overall pick in 2013. The 24-year-old became a key player for the Wizards in 2016-17, averaging 13.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while shooting 51.6 percent from the field and 43.4 percent from three-point range.

Not only did his 9.4 win shares lead the team, but his offensive rating led the NBA, per Basketball Reference. Coupled with his continued improvement on defense, Porter has become a valuable contributor on both ends of the floor.

The Kings clearly recognized this ability and rewarded Porter with a hefty new deal.

However, his time with the Wizards isn't necessarily over. In the past, the former Georgetown star has discussed his interest in staying in Washington.

"I love D.C. I went to school here. I became a big part of what goes on around here. This is like home for me," he said in May, per Chase Hughes of CSN Mid-Atlantic. "It's been great for me. ... It's somewhere where I grew up, being in college in D.C. I love this city."

The ball is in Washington's court, as the team now needs to decide if it wants to keep Porter around at his current price.
