Don C and Jordan Brand Bring Mother's Day Vibes to the Air Jordan 2
The operating relationship between Chicago-bred designer and Kanye West confidant Don C and Jordan Brand can be traced back to 2015. It was toward the tail end of the Obama presidency that Don C, whose given name is Don Crawley, set up to tackle a sneaker most Air Jordan fans ignore: the Air Jordan II.
Working with Jordan Brand became a seamless experience. Being a Chicago native, Don C was raised on the anecdote of Michael Jordan. "I'm Chi-Town all the way," he explained to Hypebeast's Helena Yeung.
Jordan Brand handed Don C—who had established his mainstream aesthetic thanks to a prior deal with Mitchell and Ness—creative control over the Air Jordan II. He stripped down the shoe and built it up using premium quilted leather and extended suede overlays.
First up in 2015 was the all-blue "Don C" Air Jordan II. The following year, it was the "Beach" version that captivated audiences.

It was an endeavor that in many ways tipped a cap to Peter Moore's original design. Back in 1986, the Air Jordan II was the first Nike sneaker not to feature any Swoosh-related branding marks, opting for a premium look instead. The shoe was also brought to life overseas in Italy.
Nothing unveiled since '86 has been able to capture Moore's archetype as well as Don C has. On Saturday, the "Arctic Orange" Air Jordan II aims to keep the sneaker alive and well.
Synced up with Mother's Day 2017, the "Arctic Orange" II at first glance appears to reflect a soft, muted pink tone. Taking notes from the three drops Don C has worked on thus far, the "Arctic Orange" II wins in regards to subtly. Aside from his traditional metallic gold accents featured on the laces, the shoe is covered in a bed of pink.
Don C has become an admiral for Jordan Brand. He's helped forge Jordan Brand's battle plan in their pursuit to infiltrate subculture—a war they've been fighting in public with Adidas.

You can already picture celebrities and influencers in the "Arctic Orange" IIs, blasting Instagram and Snapchat with exclusive shots. DJ Khaled was drawn to the wave immediately.
"I didn't know that they only making these for kids. It makes the shoe 10 times more exclusive even though they're already exclusive. They're pink Don Cs. I haven't seen them. I haven't even seen Don C with them," the "We the Best" DJ discussed with Hypebeast's Keith Estlier.
These sneakers fall directly in line with Kanye West's Yeezy Boost line and Pharell's Human NMD series.
The main caveat being, these Just Don x Air Jordan IIs will be released in women's and grade school sizes. And to be honest, this marketing structure features "Fiji Water dripped over cool ice" levels of refreshing.
Exclusive premium sneakers have long fallen into adult male size runs. Don C's decision to flip the script opens the door to a new market while allowing the "Arctic Orange" IIs to carve out its own legacy. In his mind, it was about family.

"My family couldn't participate in the last couple of Jordan releases, so it felt good to allow them to take part," Don C explained, per Air.Jordan.com.
Even if you're bitter about the sizing chart, how can you not love a monochromatic pink shoe with a $350 price point dropping in time for Mother's Day?
