Champions League Results 2017: Qualified Teams After Wednesday's Quarter-Finals

Tom SunderlandApr 19, 2017

The semi-finals of this season's UEFA Champions League took shape on Wednesday after Juventus and AS Monaco defeated respective quarter-final opponents Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund to advance in the competition.

Juve travelled to the Camp Nou and finished the work they started in Turin last week, drawing 0-0 to seal a 3-0 aggregate win, while Monaco trio Kylian Mbappe, Radamel Falcao and Valere Germain completed a 3-1 triumph.

They'll join Spanish powerhouses Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the last four. Los Blancos clinched a controversial 4-2 victory over Bayern Munich on Tuesday to book a 6-3 aggregate win, while Atleti's 1-1 draw at Leicester City was enough to build on their 1-0 victory in the first leg and progress.

Real are looking to become the first team in Champions League history to successfully defend the European crown, not to mention hunting their third triumph in the space of four seasons.

The draw for this season's semi-finals takes place at 11 a.m. BST (6 a.m. ET), per the official UEFA website, and here we profile some of those teams still contesting this season's Champions League.

Monaco's defeat of Borussia Dortmund was completed on Wednesday after the Ligue 1 outfit produced another clinical display to cement their place in the last four, and deservedly so, one would have to say.

Mbappe punished the German side once again after three minutes at the Stade Louis II when he pounced on Roman Burki's flap in the Dortmund goal, per BT Sport (via Eurosport UK):

Falcao unearthed a second when Thomas Lemar fed an inviting ball into the Dortmund box after 17 minutes, and it wasn't until the 47th minute that Marco Reus got the guests on the board:

However, that was where Dortmund's comeback attempt was halted, and even Mbappe's replacement, Germain, appeared to absorb some of his team-mate's touch, scoring almost straight after coming off the bench.

Many will sympathise with Dortmund's defeat following the traumatic events of last week's bomb attack in Germany, per BBC News, although there aren't many who could begrudge Monaco as befitting semi-finalists.

Real Madrid

Two contentious offside calls and a debatable red card for Bayern midfielder Arturo Vidal ensured Real's extra-time win on Tuesday didn't go down with a whimper.

Robert Lewandowski's penalty early in the second half set the Germans up for triumph, but Goal's Ben Hayward highlighted it was ultimately a lack of clarity over some decisions that left gloom on an otherwise brilliant spectacle:

At least that's as far as Bayern fans will be concerned. The Santiago Bernabeu was sent into raptures when Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 76th minute, even if Sergio Ramos' own goal minutes later forced extra time.

Those added 30 minutes gave Ronaldo the time he needed to complete one of the most memorable hat-tricks he'll ever score, bringing him within touch of another remarkable European record, per Squawka:

Having already won two of the previous three tournaments, there's a sense the Madrid giants have developed a winning mentality that, coupled with the enormous talent in their squad, makes for a dangerous combination.

Throw into that mix the emerging managerial nous of Zinedine Zidane, who led the club to Champions League glory last season, and Real stand another chance of holding their grip on not just Spain—but the continent, too.
