Premier League Results Week 33: Sunday's 2017 EPL Scores, Top Scorers and Table

Tom SunderlandApr 16, 2017

Manchester United dealt Chelsea's Premier League title bid a huge blow on Sunday after beating the Blues 2-0 at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera.

Manager Antonio Conte's side remained four points ahead of second-placed Tottenham Hotspur following their second loss in four matches, while the Red Devils moved back into fifth place despite Zlatan Ibrahimovic's absence.

Earlier on Sunday, Liverpool ground out a tough 1-0 victory over West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns, where Roberto Firmino's first-half injury-time breakthrough proved the difference between the two sides.

United Halt Chelsea's Title Charge

United's first home Premier League win in more than two months could hardly have been sweeter as Rashford rose to the challenge in serious style, firing the Red Devils en route to an audacious three-point haul.

There was a hint of controversy after Herrera appeared to handle the ball before cutting a sumptuous ball into Rashford's path, and the youngster eased the pressure of Ibrahimovic's absence with an early incision:

Chelsea didn't look like their usual selves for the remainder of the first half and failed to open up many chances in front of goal, with Diego Costa struggling in particular to find space in the opponent's half.

And Herrera turned from creator into finisher early in the second half, blazing a deflected shot in from just inside the Chelsea box as manager Jose Mourinho's side doubled their advantage. Kristof Terreur of Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws noted the Premier League title race was opening back up:

United couldn't add to their tally from there, but the most important factor for Mourinho is that Chelsea were incapable of penetrating his defence and failed to score in the league for just the third time this season.

The result was even more valuable to Tottenham as far as teams competing for the title are concerned, lifting United's spirits ahead of Thursday's UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg at home to Anderlecht.

Reds Edge Baggies in Feisty Affair

Liverpool have risen as a goal factory under the tutelage of manager Jurgen Klopp, but the German tactician will have undoubtedly been content at seeing his side scrap a close 1-0 win in their trip to the west Midlands.

A first clean sheet in more than two months saw the Reds emerge victorious against another top-half side and complete Liverpool's commitments against the Premier League's top teams with a sterling record, per Sky Sports Statto:

That being said, West Brom weren't without their own selection of late chances, and Tony Barrett of JOE.co.uk deservedly hailed the heroics of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who produced a top save on Matt Phillips late on:

For the time being, Liverpool are back in third despite having played one game more than Manchester City, who are two points below them once again with only a handful of games remaining in the season.

The Baggies, meanwhile, remain eighth and still have a chance of beating their best-ever Premier League finish (eighth), but they'll need to show more attacking verve—especially at home—if they're to do so.
