4-Star OL Prospect Max Wray Commits to Ohio State
Coveted offensive lineman Max Wray, a former Georgia Bulldogs commit, announced Saturday he's planning to play college football at Ohio State.
Barton Simmons of 247Sports confirmed the latest addition to the Buckeyes' 2018 recruiting class and passed along a statement from the 4-star recruit:
"For me, the "X" factor was the moment I walked onto the Ohio State campus. It felt like home and it took me by surprise to be honest. After a month of getting to know coach [Urban] Meyer and coach [Greg Studrawa] over the phone, once I met with them in person and spent time with the players it was 100 percent obvious to me, and my family, Ohio State was the fit we had been looking for.
"
Wray is the No. 57 overall recruit in the 2018 class, according to Scout. He's also the seventh-best offensive tackle and the second-best player at the position among next year's group from Tennessee.
The Franklin High School stalwart already possesses collegiate size at 6'6" and 281 pounds, though he'll likely continue to bulk up before next year. He combines that impressive stature with smooth footwork and a well-rounded skill set built for both run and pass blocking.
His Scout evaluation projects he'll eventually line up on the all-important left side:
"He has great length, he is very coordinated, he is constantly moving his feet, and he is growing into his frame nicely. He is a long, lean offensive tackle that is adding good weight, getting stronger, and improving on a constant basis. What stands out most are his feet and his ability to move. He keeps his feet moving while engaged, he can move with edge rushers, and he flashes good balance. His technique is good and he can shoot his hands, lock them in, and then take control. Wray is an offensive lineman who can be that true left tackle on the next level.
"
Wray will have to wait at least one year before that position becomes available at Ohio State. Jamarco Jones opted to return for his senior season rather than leave for the 2017 NFL draft at the end of the month, so he's slated to anchor the offensive line once again.
Looking ahead, it wouldn't be a surprise if the high-upside prospect starts his college career on the right side before sliding over to the left as an upperclassman. Giving him a year or two of development should help him add more power to his frame to handle elite edge-rushers.
