Holders Real looked in trouble early on in Bavaria as they were outplayed and went a goal down to Arturo Vidal in the 25th minute.
However, the Chilean midfielder then missed a penalty, and a second-half double from Ronaldo either side of Javi Martinez's sending-off put Real in charge of the tie ahead of next week's return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Portuguese superstar reached yet another milestone with his two goals:
BVB's clash with Monaco had been put back a day following Tuesday's worrying incident in which the German club's bus was victim to a bomb attack, per BBC News.
The hosts were 2-0 down before half-time after Mbappe's opener and Sven Bender's own goal. Ousmane Dembele pulled one back for Dortmund 12 minutes into the second half only for Mbappe to net Monaco's third 11 minutes from time after a defensive error, per BT Sport Football:
The drama was not over, though, as Shinji Kagawa scored Dortmund's second in the 84th minute to give his side a glimmer of hope ahead of the second leg.
Manager Thomas Tuchel said after the clash he felt his side should have had more time to recover following Tuesday's events, per BT Sport Football:

There was strong evidence to suggest the foul from Marc Albrighton on Griezmann to concede the penalty occurred outside the penalty area.
But, on the balance of play, Atletico deserved the narrow victory.
