Northwestern Rower Mohammed Ramzan Dies During Practice at Age 19
Northwestern rower Mohammed Ramzan was found dead in the Chicago area's North Shore Channel on Monday night after falling into the water during a morning practice session. He was 19.
ESPN.com passed along a statement from Northwestern vice president for student affairs Patricia Telles-Irvin on Ramzan's death.
"We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to Mohammed's family and friends for this tragic loss," Telles-Irvin said. "The loss affects us all, and we urge all members of our community to reach out and support one another."
Northwestern Crew, which was founded in 1981, posted a message on its Instagram page in his memory late Monday:
Audrina Bigos of CBS Chicago reported team members weren't wearing life preservers when Ramzan went overboard around 7:35 a.m. local time. His body was recovered around 9:30 p.m., according to ESPN.com, which reported the water was "frigid."
Mariana Alfaro of the Daily Northwestern noted Lincolnwood fire chief Michael Hansen confirmed two people, a coach and a fellow team member, were transferred to the hospital after trying to locate and rescue Ramzan. A firefighter was also injured during the rescue efforts.
The team has been preparing for the Illinois Collegiate Rowing Invitational on Saturday, April 22. Its status for the competition is unclear following Monday's tragedy.
