Royal Challengers Bangalore vs. Kings XI Punjab
Kings XI, 150 for two (Amla 58, Maxwell 43), beat Royal Challengers, 148 for four (De Villiers 89, Singh 28) by eight wickets.
Even an inspired batting performance from fit-again South African De Villiers couldn't help Bangalore in their attempt to restrain Kings XI Punjab on Monday as the hosts ran free in Indore to maintain an unbeaten start to 2017.
A back injury meant De Villiers was stopped from making his season debut before Royal Challengers' second outing, where he made a late charge in form to end his innings with a substantial score of 89 runs, per ESPN Cricinfo:
India's Varun Aaron helped take the wickets of Mandeep Singh and Kedar Jadhav, but De Villiers wriggled free of his opponents and survived alongside Bangalore team-mate Stuart Binny come the end of his side's innings.
A healthy helping of nine boundaries helped the Bangalore star mount a score of 148 for four in foreign territory, and ESPN Cricinfo depicted just how crucial he was in bringing any sense of competition to the scoreline:
But while Royal Challengers came to rely heavily on one star in particular, Kings XI were far more balanced in their approach as Amla, Maxwell and Vohra each mounted respectable scores in order to spread the scoring burden.
Amla was the main instigator behind Punjab's surge past their guests, however, and he rustled up a half-century score from 32 balls as a consistent Kings XI attack closed the gap with relative ease, per Sky Sports Cricket:
Maxwell ended the display with a bang and registered one more boundary as a dire batting performance from Royal Challengers Bangalore was outclassed by hosts who deserved to retain their undefeated record.
After being bowled out in the first over, Bangalore all-rounder Shane Watson owned up to being at least partly responsible for the defeat, per ESPNCricinfo.com:
"Didn't start well with the bat and I'm certainly to blame, getting out in the first over. A few more than 170-180 would have been nice. We didn't even execute nicely with the ball. There was a little bit more dew than I thought there would be and it was skidding along more in the second innings."
