Masters Results 2017: Final Leaderboard and Reaction to Sergio Garcia's Win
Sergio Garcia won his first major golf title on Sunday as he beat Justin Rose in a sudden death play-off at the 2017 Masters.
The pair entered the final round sharing the lead at six-under, and each shot 69 while the likes of Rickie Fowler and Jordan Spieth—who were among their closest rivals at the start of the day—fell away as they both scored over par.
In the resulting play-off, the Spaniard birdied the 18th while Rose shot a bogey, sealing Garcia's first win in what was his 74th major.
The Masters shared the highlights of his final round:
Here is the final leaderboard:
Rose was typically gracious in defeat, while fellow rivals Fowler and Rory McIlroy were also among those leading the congratulations on Twitter:
So too did former Masters champions Danny Willett and Bubba Watson, the latter of whom already has the Champions Dinner on the brain:
Even long-time rival Tiger Woods got in on the act:
Naturally, there was plenty of reaction from pundits and journalists.
ESPN's Jason Sobel thought it fitting Garcia won the tournament on April 9 of all days, while colleague Darren Rovell believed it to be equally appropriate given some of the sensational sporting achievements we've witnessed in the last 12 months:
Meanwhile, The Guardian's Ewan Murray had two observations:
Given the widespread appeal of the Masters, it was little surprise to see other sporting stars of past and present weighing in.
Twenty-three-time Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Michael Phelps, former footballer Gary Lineker and former cricketer Michael Vaughan all reacted positively to Garcia's win, though NHL star Brendan Gallagher would have liked to have seen a little more animosity between the Spaniard and Rose:
With Sunday's win, Garcia is finally free of the weight of failing to capture a major of his own, having come agonisingly close on several occasions.
Whatever happens in the remainder of the 37-year-old's career—and there's no reason to think he can't win more majors after getting over the hump of his first—he has written himself into Augusta history.
