The final round shouldn't be short on drama, and Spieth's impressive Saturday sets up one of golf's top stars attempting to make what would be a significant comeback in the space of three days.
Sean Martin of the PGA Tour's official site put into context what a Spieth win would mean:
Things weren't looking good for the 2015 champion after the first round. He quadruple-bogeyed the 15th hole on the opening day and finished three over for the round.
None of the last five Masters winners was outside of the top 10 following the first day, and one couldn't help but wonder whether Spieth was dealing with a mental block. His quadruple-bogey on the 12th hole of the final round cost him the 2016 title, and ESPN Stats & Info noted how his struggles went back further at Augusta:
Yet, Spieth rebounded in the second round, going three under to move to even par for the tournament. He was even better Saturday, shooting four under.
Golf Channel shared a replay of his approach on No. 15, which showed how much had changed from Thursday for Spieth:
As if Spieth alone doesn't provide enough star power, former Masters champions Adam Scott and Charl Schwartzel remain in contention.
Plenty of fans will also tune in to see if Garcia can finally end his major championship drought. According to ESPN's Darren Rovell, Garcia has appeared in 73 major events without a victory—third-most all time.
Many have likely abandoned the idea the 37-year-old Spaniard will ever win a major. Phil Mickelson was similarly snakebitten, but he was four years younger when he finally triumphed at the 2004 Masters.
While Fowler hasn't waited nearly as long, the lack of a major win is a glaring omission on his resume, especially after he finished in the top five of each major in 2014. He looked to turn a corner after that season, yet he has failed to make the cut at three major tournaments since then and hasn't finished higher than 12th.
It's too early for Fowler to start getting the Mickelson/Garcia treatment. At 28, he has a few years until the absence of a major victory becomes a defining trait of his career. Fowler is, however, running out of time to truly fulfill the promise he showed shortly after turning pro.
With so many entertaining storylines to follow, golf fans should make sure they leave their afternoon and evening free Sunday to follow all of the action.
