Masters 2017 Leaderboard: Live Look at Friday Scores and Overall Predictions

The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia is a completely different tournament than it appeared to be just a couple of days ago.

It seemingly belonged to Dustin Johnson, who had won his last three events, was ranked as the No. 1 player in the world and also sat atop the FedEx Cup points chart.

But when he stumbled and fell in his rental home Wednesday afternoon and suffered bruises to his back and elbow, he sent the golf world into shock.

When those injuries caused Johnson to walk off the first tee Thursday afternoon, that development turned the first major tournament of the year into a wide-open affair.

Nobody took advantage of that opening more than 40-year-old veteran Charley Hoffman, the first-round leader who fired a seven-under-par 65 despite playing in severely windy conditions.

William McGirt also had a memorable opening round, shooting a three-under-par 69.

While those two players opened impressively, the Masters has never been the type of tournament that seemingly average tour players come in and dominate for four rounds. Hoffman recognized after the round that the pressure factor at the Masters did not assert itself in the opening round.

"A little bit lucky," Hoffman said, per Ben Volin of the Boston Globe. "There wasn't a ton of pressure today. You're just trying to make ends meet, really. Obviously, going to sleep on the lead at a major championship here at Augusta National is not going to be the easiest thing."

Still, don't expect Hoffman to fade away.

Big-name players are likely to be heard from, and some of those names include Sergio Garcia, Jason Day, Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose, Lee Westwood, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler.

Sergio Garcia.

Garcia was part of a large group that shot a one-under-par 71 in the opening round, and he appears to be in good form. Garcia is the 11th-ranked player in the world, and he is averaging 69.605 per round.

However, the 37-year-old has never won a major title, so we fully expect Garcia to feel the pressure on moving day or the final round if he survives Saturday's action. It will be another painful major for the Spaniard.

Day has proved he can dominate the best golfers in the world when he is on top of his game. That was the case at the 2015 PGA Championship, and Day would like to get back to that form here.

The Australian shot an unimpressive 74 in his opening round, but he had enough good shots that he may be able to bring his number down each day in the tournament. Expect the 29-year-old to be within three shots of the lead when the tees off Sunday.

Mickelson is always one of the crowd favorites at this point in his career, and the 46-year-old shot a one-under-par 71 in the opening round.

The San Diego native is the 18th-ranked player in the world, but his sharp start should do wonders for his confidence. Mickelson could make a major move over the weekend and contend for the title on Sunday.

Justin Rose has the complete game to dominate nearly any course, and he also fired an opening round of 71. Rose has the distance to set up the kind of short-iron shots that can give him a number of birdie possibilities.

He should be able to hang in there throughout the second round, and if the heat of remaining in contention doesn't bother him on moving day, he can win the tournament if he has a great day with the putter Sunday.

The key for Rose is his accuracy off the tee. He ranks 159th in driving accuracy, and he will pay a price at Augusta if he can't keep it straight.

Lee Westwood is the 54th-ranked player in the world, but he has had his share of difficulties in the major tournaments and shoul fade away over the weekend.

Rory McIlroy fired an opening round of even par 72. While he struggled to three-over-par on the opening nine, he came home with a three-under-par 33 on the back nine, and he should remain a contender throughout the weekend.

Rickie Fowler certainly has the tools to build off of his opening round of 73 and contend over the weekend. However, the 28-year-old may have a hard time playing consistently for 72 holes. He may have some spectacular moments, but we also expect him to have his disastrous holes as well.

Hoffman, Mickelson and McIlroy should remain in contention through moving day. However, when Sunday's final round comes to an end, look for McIlroy to leave Butler Cabin with his first green jacket.
