WWE's Most Controversial and Shocking Stories for the Week of April 6

Alfred KonuwaApr 6, 2017

Though WrestleMania season is over, WWE is still riding high from the momentum of its biggest show of the year on Sunday as hot crowds gave way to impactful debuts and returns. With

With John Cena and Nikki Bella making headlines for non-wrestling reasons, WWE's week of television was filled with headlines that placated the most hardcore fans. WWE looks to retain its momentum as it enters its dreaded post-WrestleMania lull season.

After months of speculation, John Cena finally got down on one knee and proposed to longtime girlfriend Nikki Bella after the pair made quick work of the otherwise entertaining Miz and Maryse. Some feared that WWE's cranky fanbase would boo the occasion, but after a heartfelt speech by Cena, the moment was very well received by Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

In addition to WWE and WrestleMania 33, E! Network figures to be another big winner in the Cena-Bella nuptials, as a potential televised wedding could draw some of the biggest ratings for Total Bellas in history.

One Versus All

Roman Reigns continued to embody his theme of "One Versus All" as he stood in a WWE ring for nearly 15 minutes and soaked in every ounce of nerd rage the Amway Center threw at him. Chant after chant was confidently smirked away and stared down by a self-aware Reigns. Bully Ray aptly described the incident, tweeting that Reigns was "playing 15,000 people like a fiddle." Reigns responded to a

Reigns responded to a near-baker's dozen of chants with five words of fury: "This is my yard now."

With Reigns, less has always been more. He has the star power and is radioactive enough to say so much in only a handful of words. And while many will continue to clamor for a heel turn, this would merely disrupt the natural passion he evokes from fans who have filled up stadiums at a record-breaking pace for his past three WrestleMania main events just to cheer and boo him. There are only two people in the entire WWE who can evoke actual heat from WWE's hippest audience of the year: Roman Reigns and Stephanie McMahon.

Superstar Shake-Up

Monday on Raw, Vince McMahon introduced recent Hall of Famer Kurt Angle as Raw's general manager and announced a forthcoming "Superstar Shake-up" next week. With a Superstar Shake-up, WWE talent on Raw and SmackDown Live figure to switch brands through trades and new deals.

Though WWE had its last draft less than a year ago, post-WrestleMania season always feels like a reset, which makes it the perfect time for a roster shake-up.

WWE typically sees a significant viewership drop-off the week after the much-heralded "Raw after Mania" show. Last year's second Raw after WrestleMania saw a 14 percent drop in viewership, per James Caldwell formerly of the PWTorch, and WWE hopes to curtail trends like these with a major event that will carry long-term implications for its television product in 2017.

Broken Gimmick

As Matt and Jeff Hardy were heavily rumored to return to WWE, there was a lot of discussion as to whether their popular-yet-litigated "Broken" gimmick would follow. WWE has established a pattern of erring on the side of nostalgia, and with stars as big as The Hardy Boyz, their vintage gimmick carried much more value to WWE's mainstream audience.

While many fans still chanted "delete" upon their return to both WrestleMania and Raw, Matt Hardy seemed to put the gimmick to rest during a Raw Talk interview where he proclaimed that the Hardy's "Expedition of Gold" had been complete. Matt demonstrated some mannerisms to the Broken character at WrestleMania and in exclusive interviews with WWE. But with WWE already selling retro Hardy merchandise, and Matt removing Broken references from his Twitter account, it seems that the Broken Universe is behind them.

Post-WrestleMania Returns

The Raw after WrestleMania always comes with the promise of surprise returns and debuts, and it did not disappoint with appearances from NXT's The Revival and Finn Balor on Raw, while Tye Dillinger and Shinsuke Nakamura arrived on SmackDown Live.

With the Superstar Shake-up set to debut next week, SmackDown has a legitimate chance to level the playing field with Raw if its current roster retains Dillinger and Nakamura while possibly acquiring Roman Reigns.

After the premature debut of Apollo Crews last year on Raw, WWE got it just right with its three newest acquisitions as Nakamura, The Revival and Dillinger had been fully developed characters on NXT for quite some time.
