Chelsea fell to a shock defeat to Palace last time out and were under pressure to make sure their comfortable lead was not cut further against Pep Guardiola's City.
Eden Hazard's 10th-minute opener was cancelled out by Sergio Aguero 19 minutes from the break. But the Belgian winger put the hosts back ahead nine minutes later and Chelsea held out for a vital win.

Spurs looked set to surrender even more points to Chelsea as they entered the 88th minute trailing 1-0 after Wayne Routledge's 11th-minute goal at the Liberty Stadium.
But Dele Alli finally levelled when he converted Christian Eriksen's cross, before Heung-Min Son and the Dane netted in stoppage time to complete a thrilling comeback.
Per BBC Match of the Day's Gary Lineker, the turnaround in south Wales means the title race is just about still alive:
But it was a huge blow for Swansea and their attempts to avoid relegation.
Paul Clement's side are now two points from safety following Hull's win, which came after an unexpectedly goal-filled game against Boro at the KCOM Stadium.
Five goals in an action-packed opening half were provided by Alvaro Negredo, Lazar Markovic, Oumar Niasse, Abel Hernandez and Marten de Roon, before Harry Maguire provided the lethal blow 20 minutes from time.
The victory lifted Hull out of the relegation zone for the first time since October, but it almost certainly condemned Middlesbrough to the drop.
Liverpool's struggles against the smaller sides continued as they failed to beat Eddie Howe's Cherries.
Benik Afobe opened the scoring at Anfield to put Bournemouth ahead, and the visitors earned a point late, thanks to Joshua King's dramatic equaliser after goals from Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi had turned the game on its head.
Arsenal earned a morale-boosting win at home to the struggling Hammers after second-half goals from Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud.
Meanwhile, after four league wins on the bounce, Sam Allardyce's Palace were beaten by Southampton, with Christian Benteke's opener counting for little in the end after goals from Nathan Redmond, Maya Yoshida and James Ward-Prowse.
