La Liga Table 2017: Latest Standings Following Tuesday's Week 30 Results

James DudkoApr 4, 2017

Atletico Madrid moved seven points off the top of La Liga after beating Real Sociedad at the Vicente Calderon Stadium on Tuesday. Atleti have played two games more than leaders Real Madrid, but they are now on a strong run ahead of facing their bitter local rivals in the derby on Saturday.

Sociedad's defeat sent the club tumbling out of the European places. Their fall left the door ajar for Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal, both winners on the night, to cement their hold on the UEFA Europa League places.

Here are the final scores from Tuesday's matches:

Recap

It took just one goal to separate Atleti from Sociedad at the Vicente Calderon. The goal came from an unusual source when Filipe Luis combined brilliantly with Fernando Torres.

A clever one-two saw the latter play in the Brazilian left-back to net the winner. Torres is not as accomplished a finisher as he used to be, but he has become proficient at supplying goals, per OptaJose:

Torres may no longer be as sharp in front of goal as he once was, but Luis is beginning to develop a niche as a clutch scorer, according to La Liga's official Twitter account:

Atleti couldn't pad their lead, despite always posing a threat on the break. In particular, quick and perceptive wide forwards Antoine Griezmann and Yannick Ferreira Carrasco always found spaces between the lines.

Their subtle and sudden movement helped the home side pepper Sociedad's goal:

However, despite Atletico's chances, Sociedad manager Eusebio had a different view of the game. He felt his side was stymied by the hosts' negativity and overtly physical approach, per ESPN.com's Dermot Corrigan:

As usual, Bilbao found themselves inspired by veteran target man Aritz Aduriz. The 36-year-old notched one half of his brace after converting from the penalty spot in the 17th minute.

Aduriz just loves scoring in front of his home support:

Athletic won the spot-kick when the lively Iker Muniain was felled in the box. Muniain consistently ran Espanyol ragged, using his pace, flair and vision to open up the visitors' defence for fun.

Yet it wasn't until 19 minutes later when Aduriz doubled Bilbao's lead. The classy centre-forward got his left foot to a smart cross from Benat Etxebarria.

Aduriz continues to outscore homegrown players in Spain's top flight, according to OptaJose:

The evening's other match saw Villarreal go above Bilbao into fifth after securing a 1-0 win over Real Betis at the Estadio Benito Villamarin. Adrian Lopez got the winner just after half-time when he ghosted in to meet a Jose Angel cross.

Lopez has always been a cerebral and technically gifted striker with sound instincts in the box. He has helped put the Yellow Submarine's bid to finish in the European places on track.

Bilbao also remain heavily involved in the same race. Yet it's Atletico who can have a big say in what happens at the top if they beat the leaders in Saturday's derby.
