WWE WrestleMania 33 Results: Full Grades for Top Superstars at Epic Event

Aaron BowerApr 3, 2017

WWE's biggest and best stars had a somewhat mixed night at WrestleMania 33, which epitomized the show as a whole.

Despite promising plenty, large aspects of the show flattered to deceive when it mattered. Some of the event's big bouts flopped, while the big, feelgood moments essentially came from much lower down the card.

But how did the big names fare? Here's a detailed look at how some of them got on, with full grades to boot.

AJ Styles

The decision to drop AJ Styles down from the WWE Championship picture always felt a strange one from the get-go—and in hindsight, it looks even more peculiar given how strong he performed on Sunday.

There was never any doubting that The Phenomenal One would deliver when it mattered. Thankfully for him, his opponent, Shane McMahon, also produced a strong performance to create one of the most enjoyable matches of the night.

Styles going on first will have surprised some, but all it did was prove just how important he is to the company. He and Shane were trusted with kicking WrestleMania off with a bang, and they didn't disappoint.

The Phenomenal One was dynamic, energetic and as brilliant as usual. The result was clearly a formality—the challenge for WWE is how it continues the momentum of AJ's first WrestleMania victory.

There could be a return to the WWE Championship scene—although there's always the possibility Shinsuke Nakamura is waiting in the wings too.

Grade: A-

Seth Rollins

Like Styles, there was little doubt Seth Rollins would deliver an in-ring masterclass. Unlike his SmackDown counterpart, however, WWE left an element of doubt in the minds of fans concerning his health and well-being.

Thankfully, the onus was on the magnificent storytelling rather than any legitimate injury to Seth.

WWE told this story well leading up to WrestleMania. Triple H fulfilling his cerebral assassin moniker to perfection by systematically targeting Rollins' injured knee was captivating, leaving everyone wondering whether Rollins would get to 'Mania in any sort of shape ready to fight.

Rollins pulled out some great spots and some brilliant in-ring moments for fans to gasp at. The Phoenix Splash was pure poetry in motion, while the three-way spot resulting in Stephanie McMahon going through the table was an interesting way for the match to climax.

But ultimately, Rollins got another WrestleMania moment after missing out last year. It was merely an added bonus that he didn't disappoint in the ring, and his expected feud with Samoa Joe will be a great platform for him to move on to.

Grade: B+

Brock Lesnar

The Beast Incarnate gained revenge on nemesis Goldberg at WrestleMania in a match that may have surprised some with its content and, indeed, its duration.

There was a possibility WWE could have pulled another short-and-sharp bout here, and the company even teased it in the early seconds.

Thankfully, things were drawn out a bit longer than the meeting at Survivor Series.

And Lesnar at least looked back to his dominating best on the big stage, which is essentially the only way to book him.

Kicking out of the Jackhammer was a smart element to add to the match too, as it made Brock seem that bit more resilient than his previous skirmishes with Goldberg made him look.

The leap over Goldberg prior to the finish was another clever moment to add in, although on the whole, fans will perhaps just be glad to see this rivalry over and done with.

Grade: C+

Roman Reigns

The Big Dog was handed the big task of closing WrestleMania 33, and while the heel turn his career so desperately needs never materialized, there were bright moments during his match against The Undertaker.

The result was perhaps the right one in the way of Taker going out on his back and putting Reigns over, although one questions whether Reigns will truly ever be over so long as he is a babyface.

And the bout had too many awkward moments to mention. On occasions, they were struggling to lift one another up, and sadly, it became all too obvious as the match wore on that Taker was struggling with the pace of it.

But Reigns held his own in the ring, if nothing else. The spear through the announce table was a good spot, but scenes like Taker struggling to execute the Last Ride were what this bout will be remembered for.

Reigns' career, at least in the eyes of WWE fans, feels like it is in limbo. That's something that has to change in the weeks heading out of 'Mania if his relationship with the people who matter is to finally click.
