Atletico Madrid jumped to third in La Liga on Saturday after beating Malaga 2-0 at La Rosaleda to climb one point above Sevilla and within five points of second-placed Barcelona.
Fernando Torres helped set up both goals for Los Rojiblancos as Koke eased Atleti into a valuable lead before left-back Filipe Luis chipped over Malaga goalkeeper Carlos Kameni for the visitors' second in the 74th minute.
Villarreal missed their chance to close the gap on Spain's top four after surrendering a 3-2 home defeat to Eibar thanks to goals from Pedro Leon, Kike Garcia and Takashi Inui, while Roberto Soriano bagged a brace for the home side.

That result allowed Athletic Bilbao to move within a point of the Yellow Submarine after Aritz Aduriz and Inaki Williams scored to clinch a 2-1 victory at Osasuna despite Sergio Leon's late consolation.
Elsewhere, Real Sociedad ended a two-match losing streak by drawing 1-1 at home to Leganes, who sealed their third successive league draw on the bounce and moved six points clear of the relegation zone.

Recap
Atletico's rise through La Liga's hierarchy continued on Saturday after manager Diego Simeone's side beat Malaga 2-0 to cement four successive wins in the league for the first time this season.
The hosts boasted more possession and almost three times as many shots on goal as their guests, per WhoScored.com, but Malaga wilted under pressure for Koke's opener as ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan hailed the midfielder's spurt in form of late:
The Anchovies troubled Simeone's side, and former Barcelona man Sandro Ramirez looked most likely to score on their behalf thanks to a wealth of attempts on goal, but a stingy Atletico back line had other plans.
There was a sense of tension at Rosaleda until Filipe booked a more comfortable lead for his side with a deftly taken finish entering the game's final stages, earning some praise from UEFA's Richard Martin:
Eibar produced the biggest shock of the day when a 3-2 win at Villarreal was enough to temporarily take them up to seventh, although Athletic's later victory would see them drop back down to eighth by day's end.
Soriano's 18th-minute header steered manager Fran Escriba's side in front at the break, but Leon ignited Eibar's comeback with a 48th-minute penalty before Kike's and Inui's additions sealed a milestone for the club, per OptaJose:
Soriano tapped in a second of the match at game's end to rescue some dignity for the hosts, but Eibar were left with three points to their name in very tough territory to come away as arguably the biggest winners of the weekend.
Meanwhile, young and old teamed up in Pamplona as Aduriz, 36, scored his 100th La Liga goal for Athletic in a 2-1 victory over Osasuna, where 22-year-old heir Williams provided a vital second, per Yahoo's Andrew Gaffney:
Both players scored from very similar areas inside the 18-yard box to give Los Leones a much-needed win in their hopes of gaining European qualification, with a single point now separating sixth and seventh in La Liga.
Real Sociedad are among that group of hopefuls, too, except their 1-1 draw at home to Leganes wasn't the result they were hoping for as Alexander Szymanowski opened for the guests before Juanmi rescued a point for La Real.
