ANA Inspiration 2017: Suzann Pettersen Shoots to Top of Leaderboard on Friday
Suzann Pettersen vaulted into the lead during the second round of the 2017 ANA Inspiration, which was delayed due to darkness.
Windy conditions forced play to be suspended in the first round, which wasn't completed until Friday afternoon. Players did have an hour break before coming back on the course to get in as much golf as they could before the darkness consumed Rancho Mirage, California.
Pettersen shot a 69 that dropped her 36-hole score to seven-under par, with six players tied for second place, one shot off the lead.
Here's the top of the leaderboard:
| 1 | Suzann Pettersen | -7 | F |
| T2 | Minjee Lee | -6 | F |
| T2 | Nelly Korda | -6 | F |
| T2 | Inbee Park | -6 | F |
| T2 | Cristie Kerr | -6 | F |
| T2 | Karine Icher | -6 | 10 |
| T2 | Michelle Wie | -6 | 7 |
| T8 | Sung Hyun Park | -5 | 8 |
| T8 | So Yeon Ryu | -5 | 8 |
| T8 | Moriya Jutanugarn | -5 | F |
Pettersen is seeking her third major championship and first victory at the ANA Inspiration. She has finished second in this tournament three times in the past, most recently in 2010. Her last win in any LPGA Tour event came in June 2015.
Inbee Park is among the group of players bunched together in second place. She briefly held the lead by getting her score to eight-under par, but back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 17 and 18 cost her two shots.
"I have to drop more putts this weekend," Park said, via LPGA on Twitter.
Park had been going through a long dry spell on the LPGA Tour that she finally broke four weeks ago at the HSBC Women's Champions tournament, her first win of any kind since the 2016 Olympics.
Karine Icher, who was in sole possession of the lead after the first round, kept pace in the second round despite only being able to get in 11 holes before play was suspended.
This is already one of Icher's best showings in a major tournament. The 38-year-old veteran has just two top-10 finishes in majors during her career and has just two top-20 finishes at the ANA Inspiration in 11 previous trips.
Michelle Wie was able to move up two spots into a tie for second place thanks to shooting two-under through eight holes before play was stopped.
Joining Wie, Park and others at just one shot off the lead is Christie Kerr, who shot an okay 71 to get down to six-under par. She finished strong with this birdie on the final hole to keep the pressure on Pettersen:
With things bunched together at the top, there is no margin for error with anyone fighting for a title. Stamina will also be a huge factor for the players, who still have to complete their second round before the third round even begins tomorrow.
