West Defeats East in McDonald's All-American Game; Michael Porter Jr. Named MVP
The West defeated the East 109-107 in the 2017 McDonald's All-American Game on Wednesday night at United Center in Chicago, as Missouri commit Michael Porter Jr. took home MVP honors.
Porter—who recently committed to the Missouri Tigers after the Washington Huskies released him from his national letter of intent—racked up a team-high 17 points as well as eight rebounds, and his two flashiest points came on a big lob finish in the first half, as ESPN documented on Twitter:
According to CBS Sports, Porter now owns a share of some prestigious hardware:
While the intensity level wasn't particularly high until the closing seconds, several top 2017 recruits stood out as action in the Windy City unfolded.
Chief among those players, according to Scout.com's Evan Daniels and ESPN.com's Jeff Borzello, was Mohamed Bamba (17 points)—who remains unsigned as April approaches:
According to Scout, the 5-star center is the No. 2 player among all 2017 recruits and has narrowed down his options to the Texas Longhorns, Duke Blue Devils, Kentucky Wildcats and Michigan Wolverines.
Speaking of unsigned recruits, Trevon Duval out of IMG Academy proved why he's one of the biggest prizes on the board behind Bamba.
A 5-star point guard who's the third-ranked player in the class of 2017 and the No. 1 floor general among that subset, Duval racked up eight points and three assists for the East as he flashed the electric capabilities that have the Arizona Wildcats, Kansas Jayhawks, Duke Blue Devils, Baylor Bears and Seton Hall Pirates drooling over his potential.
Elsewhere, East guard Lonnie Walker IV boosted his profile as he gets set to head to Miami for his freshman season in the fall of 2017, per Borzello:
There was also East point guard Collin Sexton, who showed off his stellar court vision in spectacular ways, as SportsCenter documented on Twitter:
Sexton finished with eight points and seven assists in the loss, and USA Today's Jason Jordan noted the floor general is bound to give defenses fits when he suits up for the Alabama Crimson Tide:
With the showcase in the books, the McDonald's All-American participants will turn their attention toward collegiate futures packed with promise.
And while most of the big-name participants have already made their commitments official, Bamba, Duval, Kevin Knox II, Brian Bowen II and several other top-notch talents should make news in the coming weeks as they make decisions and shake up the college basketball landscape.
Postgame Reaction
"This is a dream come true," Porter said, per Rivals.com's Eric Bossi. "I just wanted to go out there and have fun but this game was competitive. I know a lot of All-Star games people just go up and down the floor and dunk but we were playing hard."
According to hoops scribe Nick Medline, Porter Jr. has his sights set on recruiting some of the biggest available names to Missouri:
"I think I played well," Bamba said, per Daniels. "I did shoot an air ball, there's some spots I can tweak and some stuff I could have done differently to help my team win, but overall I thought I played well."
