North Carolina v Duke

Arizona Beats North Dakota, 100-82

The day's most impressive showing belong to the Arizona Wildcats, who hit the century mark with a dominant performance against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks.

The spotlight belonged to likely NBA lottery pick Lauri Markkanen, who scored 20 points (8-of-12 shooting) and punctuated the win with a strong transition dunk, via NCAA March Madness on Twitter:

Rawle Alkins matched Markkanen with a team-high 20 points, while Allonzo Trier posted a tidy 18 points in 31 minutes.

North Dakota's Quinton Hooker led all scorers with 25 points, but the Wildcats dominated the Fighting Hawks 39-26 on the glass and made 16 more free throws (24-8) than the opposition in the triumphant effort.

In order to stay alive, Arizona will have to take care of St. Mary's on Saturday with a spot in the Sweet 16 on the line.

Florida State Beats Florida Gulf Coast, 86-80

The Florida Gulf Coast Eagles provided highlights galore Thursday night, but the return of Dunk City wasn't enough to push them past the Florida State Seminoles, who emerged with an 86-80 victory.

Four Florida State scorers finished in double-figures, with Dwayne Bacon standing out among that esteemed group. In 34 minutes, Bacon dropped a team-high 25 points (11-of-17 shooting) and grabbed nine rebounds.

He also threw down a vicious one-handed slam toward the end of the first half that gave the Seminoles some much-needed momentum entering the break:

Jonathan Isaac added 17 points, 10 boards and five assists, while Xavier Rathan-Mayes chipped in 10 points, five rebounds and five dimes of his own.

Brandon Goodwin shined for FGCU with 28 points, but the Eagles shot just 41.0 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from three as a team.

The Seminoles will now meet the 11th-seeded Musketeers in Round 2.

Wisconsin Beats Virginia Tech, 84-74

Perhaps the Wisconsin Badgers will be the Big Ten's savior in this year's tournament.

Although the conference isn't particularly well represented in terms of seeding, the Badgers acquitted themselves nicely with a 10-point win over the ninth-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies.

Bronson Koenig, who has a well-known penchant for filling it up, paced the Badgers with 28 points on 9-of-21 shooting, including 8-of-17 from three.

Nigel Hayes and Ethan Haap added 16 and 10 points, respectively, and the Badgers' veteran prowess proved too much for the Hokies to overcome late despite a sensational showing from Zach LeDay (23 points).

Next up for the Badgers is a date with the top-seeded Villanova Wildcats.

Iowa State Beats Nevada, 84-73

On a day largely dominated by chalk, it was fitting that the Iowa State Cyclones put a trendy sleeper like the Nevada Wolfpack away by double digits 84-73.

The energetic up-and-down affair was an aesthetic delight, and the Cyclones thrived in the open floor as Monte Morris (19 points, eight assists, eight rebounds) flirted with a triple-double.

Then there was Deonte Burton, who filled it up with 14 points while rocking the rim a few times, as NCAA March Madness documented on Twitter:

The Wolfpack countered with 22 points from Cameron Oliver and 20 from Jordan Caroline.

By virtue of the win, Iowa State set up a second-round clash with the Purdue Boilermakers.

St. Mary's Beats VCU, 85-77

St. Mary's dominated the first half and held off a VCU rally in the second, ultimately knocking off the Rams, 85-77.

After heading into the half with a 46-31 lead, the Gaels saw their lead shrink to just two points with 10:42 remaining in the game. That was as close as the Rams got, however, as five Gaels posted double-digit points, led by Jock Landale's 18 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks.

Jequan Lewis was the driving force for VCU, scoring 30 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Gaels.

Up next for St. Mary's is either No. 2 Arizona or No. 15 North Dakota.

Purdue Beats Vermont, 80-70

MILWAUKEE, WI - MARCH 16: Anthony Lamb #3 of the Vermont Catamounts battles for a rebound against Carsen Edwards #3 and Caleb Swanigan #50 of the Purdue Boilermakers in the second half during the first round of the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament a

The Purdue Boilermakers held off a stiff challenge from the Vermont Catamounts in first-round action on Thursday night, pulling away late to earn an 80-70 win.

Vermont had no answers for Vince Edwards (21 points) or Caleb Swanigan, who scored 16 points and dominated in the paint with 14 rebounds and three blocks. Anthony Lamb led the way for Vermont (20 points, nine rebounds), but it wasn't enough to upset a talented Purdue squad.

Up next for the No. 4 seed in the Midwest will be a tough matchup against either No. 5 Iowa State or No. 12 Nevada.

Villanova Beats Mount St. Mary's, 76-56

It took Villanova just over six minutes to score their first points of the game against Mount St. Mary's. They didn't take their first lead until the 1:28 mark of the first half.

No worries. The defending champs still won by 20.

The Wildcats dominated the Mountaineers in the second half, winning 76-56. Donte DiVincenzo led the Wildcats, posting 21 points and 13 rebounds off the bench, while five Wildcats in total scored double-digit points. Miles Wilson led the Mountaineers with 22 points and seven rebounds.

It wasn't the most convincing performance from Villanova, which will surely be concerned with Kris Jenkins finishing just 2-of-13 from the field. Nonetheless, the Wildcats ratcheted up their defense in the second half and adjusted to the strong guard play from Mount St. Mary's, playing like the top overall seed after a slow start.

They'll need to put together two complete halves in their next matchup, however, when they'll face either No. 8 Wisconsin or No. 9 Virginia Tech.

Xavier Beats Maryland, 76-65

ORLANDO, FL - MARCH 16: Kaiser Gates #22 of the Xavier Musketeers reacts after making a three point basket in the second half against the Maryland Terrapins during the first round of the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Amway Center on March 16,

Xavier and Maryland traded punched for most of their first-round matchup. And then the Musketeers knocked the Terrapins to the mat.

With just over 13 minutes to play, Maryland led Xavier, 50-47. The Musketeers quickly ran off 14 unanswered points and never relented the lead from there, however, knocking off the 6-seed Terps, 76-65.

Trevon Bluiett had another strong game for Xavier, notching 21 points, while Sean O'Mara added 18 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Kevin Huerter paced Maryland with 19 points and five assists.

Awaiting Xavier is the winner of No. 3 Florida State and No. 14 Florida Gulf Coast.

Northwestern Beats Vanderbilt, 68-66

SALT LAKE CITY, UT - MARCH 16: Bryant McIntosh #30 of the Northwestern Wildcats celebrates with teammates after defeating the Vanderbilt Commodores during the first round of the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Vivint Smart Home Arena on March 16

For the first time in program history, Northwestern won an NCAA tournament game. It's a result Vanderbilt will long lament, however.

The Wildcats pulled off the 68-66 victory, but a wild finish was as much a part of the story as Northwestern's historic win. The Commodores went ahead 66-65 on a Riley LaChance layup with 17 seconds remaining, but Matthew Fisher-Davis—either not realizing the score or falsely believing Vanderbilt had a foul to give—fouled Bryant McIntosh on the inbound.

NCAA March Madness shared the bizarre moment:

McIntosh made both free throws, giving Northwestern a one point advantage with 14 seconds remaining.

On the ensuing possession, LaChance took a deep three that didn't fall, and Northwestern ultimately came up with the ball and the win. McIntosh was excellent for the Wildcats, scoring 25 points, while Fisher-Davis' gaffe will overshadow an otherwise excellent performance (22 points).

If Northwestern wants to double its tournament win total, however, they'll need to pull a major upset over 1-seed Gonzaga in the Round of 32.

Middle Tennessee Beats Minnesota, 81-72

MILWAUKEE, WI - MARCH 16: JaCorey Williams #22 of the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders attempts a shot while being guarded by Reggie Lynch #22 and Amir Coffey #5 of the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the second half during the first round of the 2017 NCAA Men'

Only four times since 1985 has at least one No. 12 seed failed to beat a No. 5 seed in the NCAA tournament. This year won't be the fifth.

Middle Tennessee was the latest No. 12 to accomplish the feat, knocking off Minnesota, 81-72, behind 19 points and nine rebounds from Reggie Upshaw. A year after upsetting 2-seed Michigan State, the Blue Raiders were up to their old tricks once again.

For Minnesota, strong performances from Amir Coffey (17 points, four assists), Dupree McBrayer (16 points, five assists) and Jordan Murphy (15 points, nine rebounds) wasn't enough to pull out the win.

Middle Tennessee next faces No. 4 Butler.

Florida Beats East Tennessee State, 80-65

ORLANDO, FL - MARCH 16: Devin Robinson #1 of the Florida Gators reacts after a play against the East Tennessee State Buccaneers during the first round of the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Amway Center on March 16, 2017 in Orlando, Florida. (P

East Tennessee State gave Florida everything it could handle in a tight first half, trailing the Gators at halftime by just a point. But Florida was too much for the East Tennessee State to handle in the second frame, pulling away to secure an 80-65 victory.

Devin Robinson was fantastic for Florida, posting 24 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Kasey Hill and Chris Chiozza chipped in 14 points apiece for the Gators, while T.J. Cromer (19 points) led the way for the Buccaneers.

The Gators will face a stiff challenge in the Round of 32, where 5-seed Virginia awaits.

West Virginia Beats Bucknell, 86-80

The West Virginia Mountaineers withstood a tough test from a dangerous Bucknell Bison team, winning 86-80 on Thursday.

Five Mountaineers scored 11 or more points, led by Tarik Phillip off the bench (16 points). Bucknell was led by the trio of Kimbal Mackenzie (23 points), Stephen Brown (18 points, five steals) and Nana Foulland (18 points, seven rebounds), though it wasn't enough to overcome a talented West Virginia team.

Up next for No. 4 West Virginia will be an intriguing matchup against No. 5 Notre Dame.

Gonzaga Beats South Dakota State, 66-46

SALT LAKE CITY, UT - MARCH 16: Jordan Mathews #4 of the Gonzaga Bulldogs reacts after a play in the second half against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits during the first round of the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at Vivint Smart Home Arena on M

For one half, South Dakota State looked capable of becoming the first 16-seed in NCAA history to upset a 1-seed, trailing Gonzaga 26-22 at the half.

And then the Bulldogs flexed their might.

Gonzaga pulled away from South Dakota State in the second half, winning 66-46 behind Jordan Mathews' 16 points and five rebounds. Johnathan Williams also provided one of the game's more exciting moments in the Zags' strong second half, per NCAA March Madness:

The Bulldogs stifled the Jackrabbits on defense, holding them to just 31 percent shooting from the field, though Mike Daum still managed 17 points, seven rebounds and two blocks for the underdogs.

Certainly, it wasn't as dominating performance as would have been expected from the Bulldogs, especially on the offensive end. Things will only get trickier, as Gonzaga will face No. 8 Northwestern in the Round of 32.

Butler Beats Winthrop, 76-64

The Butler Bulldogs have a history of playing the Cinderella role in March. Turns out they know how to handle themselves when they're the favorites, too.

The Bulldogs cruised Thursday, beating Winthrop 76-64. Avery Woodson led the way for Butler with 18 points and five rebounds, spoiling Xavier Cooks' big afternoon (23 points, six rebounds) for the Eagles.

Butler now awaits No. 12 Middle Tennessee State.

Virginia Beats UNC Wilmington, 76-71

Virginia avoided becoming the latest No. 5 seed to fall victim to a 12th seed at the NCAA tournament—a regular trend throughout the years—overcoming a 15-point first-half deficit and beating UNC Wilmington 76-71.

London Perrantes (24 points) was fantastic for the Cavaliers, while Marial Shayok provided a crucial 23 points off the bench in the tight win. Chris Flemmings (18 points, nine rebounds, four assists) and Denzel Ingram (17 points) led a balanced performance from the Seahawks, who led 26-11 with 7:25 remaining in the first half but saw Virginia storm to a 30-29 lead by halftime.

Up next for the Cavaliers will be No. 4 Florida.

Notre Dame Beats Princeton 60-58

BUFFALO, NY - MARCH 16: The Notre Dame Fighting Irish bench celebrates a three point basket during the first half against the Princeton Tigers during the first round of the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament at KeyBank Center on March 16, 2017 in Buff

Princeton had the opportunity to provide the NCAA tournament with its first game-winning shot and upset. The Tigers came up just short.

Well, just long, actually. Devin Cannady had a chance to give Princeton the lead with just seconds remaining and the Tigers trailing Notre Dame by one point, but his three-pointer was long, and Steve Vasturia came up with a crucial rebound with 0.4 seconds on the clock before being fouled. He then made a free throw, and the Fighting Irish escaped with a 60-58 win.

NCAA March Madness shared the crucial moment:

Bonzie Colson led the way for Notre Dame with 18 points and seven assists, while Matt Farrell added 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals in the close shave. Princeton was led by Spencer Weisz (15 points, five rebounds, four assists) as the Tigers kept things close throughout but couldn't provide March's first moment of magic.

Up next for Notre Dame in the round of 32 will be No. 4 West Virginia.
