Team-by-Team Spring Training Prospect Report

Joel ReuterMar 6, 2017

Spring training often provides a fanbase with its first opportunity to see some of the club's top prospects in action, so the youngsters are inevitably one of the main focuses each spring.

In many cases, prospects don't have a real chance of winning a roster spot and are instead invited to big league camp for the experience that comes from facing MLB-level pitching and working out alongside established MLB talent.

That's not always true, though, as there will be at least a few rookies who break camp with a roster spot and there are a few who find themselves in a legitimate roster battle this preseason.

Ahead we've taken a team-by-team look at the top prospects in camp with each of the 30 teams and how they've performed so far this spring.

Prospect rankings reflect the current organizational rankings at MLB.com.

Arizona Diamondbacks

1 of 30
Anthony Banda /
Anthony Banda /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. LHP Anthony Banda (4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K)

2. SS Domingo Leyba (2-for-8, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 2 R)

4. 3B Dawel Lugo (2-for-11, 2 R)

6. OF Socrates Brito (4-for-14, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 3 R)

10. LHP Jared Miller (2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K)

Notes

  • Assuming the starting rotation will be comprised of Zack Greinke, Robbie Ray, Taijuan Walker, Shelby Miller and Patrick Corbin, it doesn't appear that Anthony Banda has a path to an MLB job. However, after splitting last season between Double-A and Triple-A, there's a good chance he'll debut at some point in 2017.
  • Lefty reliever Jared Miller was brilliant in the Arizona Fall League (18.1 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 30 K) and he's very much in the mix for a bullpen spot with Andrew Chafin looking like the only lock for a roster spot among southpaws.
  • Socrates Brito is competing with Jeremy Hazelbaker and non-roster invitees Gregor Blanco and Oswaldo Arcia for the fourth outfielder job.

Atlanta Braves

SS Dansby Swanson /
SS Dansby Swanson /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. SS Dansby Swanson (7-for-16, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 5 R)

6. LHP Sean Newcomb (1.0 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 1 K)

8. OF Ronald Acuna (6-for-11, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 2 R)

9. LHP Max Fried (3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K)

10. 2B Travis Demeritte (1-for-11, 1 R, 1 SB)

Notes

  • "Sometimes I find myself lumping him in with the veteran guys. The kid’s way above his years," manager Brian Snitker said of Dansby Swanson to Jeff Schultz of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
  • Left-hander Max Fried returned strong from Tommy John surgery last season and appears to be back on track, as he looks to deliver on the potential that made him the No. 7 overall pick in the 2012 draft.
  • When you consider that Ronald Acuna has played just 40 games above the rookie league level, what he's done so far this spring is all the more impressive.

Baltimore Orioles

3 of 30
Trey Mancini /
Trey Mancini /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. C Chance Sisco (1-for-5)

2. RHP Cody Sedlock (1.0 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 0 BB, 0 K)

4. SS Ryan Mountcastle (1-for-2, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 R)

5. 1B Trey Mancini (6-for-18, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 2 R)

7. LHP Chris Lee (5.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K)

8. OF Austin Hays (0-for-3)

9. OF Anthony Santander (2-for-13, 2 RBI)

10. 3B Jomar Reyes (0-for-1)

Notes

  • Rule 5 picks Anthony Santander (2-for-13, 2 RBI) and Aneury Tavarez (4-for-15, 1 2B, 2 RBI) still have an uphill battle to win a roster spot, but the broken finger suffered by Michael Bourn does help their chances a bit.
  • Chris Lee could arrive in the majors in short order if the Orioles decide his long-term future is in the bullpen, where his plus fastball-slider pairing could make him an impact arm. The development of his changeup and his overall command will ultimately be the determining factors.
  • It speaks to their proximity to the majors coming out of college that first-round pick Cody Sedlock and third-round pick Austin Hays are both in big league camp after beginning their pro careers last June.

Andrew Benintendi /
Andrew Benintendi /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. LF Andrew Benintendi (8-for-18, 4 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 3 R)

2. 3B Rafael Devers (1-for-10, 1 RBI, 1 R)

4. 1B Sam Travis (4-for-12, 3 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R)

10. 1B Nick Longhi (0-for-2)

Notes

  • Andrew Benintendi is 8-for-10 with four doubles and two home runs in his last three games as he's as hot as any hitter in spring league action right now.
  • Rafael Devers is the youngest player in big league camp (he turned 20 in October) for the Red Sox since Xander Bogaerts back in 2013, according to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.
  • Red Sox scout Blair Henry on Sam Travis (via Scott Lauber of ESPN.com), who is working his way back from a ruptured ACL: "Have you ever seen those Ken Burns documentaries in black and white? That's the era Sam Travis was supposed to play in. He was supposed to play with Cobb and Jimmie Foxx. He's all baseball, all the time, and it's not just an act. He's a kid that doesn't care about his bonus or what car he's driving or what meal money is. He just wants to play."

Chicago Cubs

5 of 30
Eloy Jimenez /
Eloy Jimenez /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. OF Eloy Jimenez (6-for-18, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 R)

2. 2B Ian Happ (4-for-17, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 R)

3. CF Albert Almora Jr. (6-for-20, 2 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 4 R)

5. 3B Jeimer Candelario (8-for-24, 1 2B, 2 3B, 2 RBI, 5 R)

7. OF Mark Zagunis (1-for-9, 1 RBI, 1 R)

10. OF D.J. Wilson (0-for-1)

Notes

  • "Sky's the limit. I think he's someone who can sit in the middle of a lineup and wreak a lot of havoc on some pitching across the major leagues. It's just a matter of him maturing as a hitter and understanding what pitchers are going to try to do to him," vice president of player development Jason McLeod told Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago.
  • Jeimer Candelario is certainly making a compelling case for a roster spot, which would either mean the Cubs opt against an eight-man bullpen or both Tommy La Stella and Matt Szczur don't make the team.
  • Albert Almora Jr. was 2-for-4 with a double and a grand slam on Sunday as he looks to prove he deserves the lion's share of playing time in center field.

Chicago White Sox

6 of 30
Lucas Giolito /
Lucas Giolito /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. 2B Yoan Moncada (3-for-14, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 2 R)

2. RHP Lucas Giolito (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K)

3. RHP Michael Kopech (1.0 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K)

4. RHP Reynaldo Lopez (4.1 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 3 K)

5. RHP Carson Fulmer (3.2 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K)

6. C Zack Collins (2-for-7)

7. RHP Zack Burdi (3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K)

8. OF Luis Alexander Basabe (1 R)

Notes

  • The White Sox's decision to release Brett Lawrie doesn't necessarily mean the second base job belongs to Yoan Moncada, as Yolmer Sanchez and Tyler Saladino are both options to break camp manning the keystone. Neither of them will stand in Moncada's way once he's deemed ready, though.
  • Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez and Carson Fulmer are probably all headed for Triple-A, but they could be battling for the role of "next man up" once the starting rotation needs reinforcement.
  • Hard-throwing Zack Burdi climbed four levels to reach Triple-A after going No. 26 overall in last year's draft, and all signs point to him carving out a spot in the big league bullpen during the upcoming season.

Cincinnati Reds

7 of 30
Amir Garrett /
Amir Garrett /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

2. LHP Amir Garrett (4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K)

3. LF Jesse Winker (6-for-19, 2 RBI, 3 R)

4. RHP Robert Stephenson (3.0 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K)

7. RHP Luis Castillo (3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K)

9. RHP Sal Romano (4.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 5 K)

10. RHP Tyler Mahle (3.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K)

Notes

  • Amir Garrett, Robert Stephenson and Sal Romano are all candidates to join Anthony DeSclafani, Scott Feldman, Brandon Finnegan and Tim Adleman in the starting rotation to begin the year.
  • Jesse Winker has seen his stock drop a bit over the past year, but he still possesses a smooth lefty swing and the potential to be a high-average, high on-base guy once he finally does reach Cincinnati. The corner outfield spots are currently occupied by Adam Duvall and Scott Schebler, though.
  • It will be interesting to see who got the better of the Dan Straily-for-Luis Castillo trade a few years from now.

Cleveland Indians

8 of 30
Bradley Zimmer /
Bradley Zimmer /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. OF Bradley Zimmer (5-for-16, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 4 R)

2. C Francisco Mejia (0-for-4)

8. SS Erik Gonzalez (6-for-14, 1 3B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 2 R)

9. OF Greg Allen (5-for-18, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 2 R)

10. 3B Yandy Diaz (2-for-9, 2 2B, 3 R)

Notes

  • Bradley Zimmer hit .257/.421/.514 with seven doubles, four home runs and 16 RBI in 22 games in the Arizona Fall League, and that strong performance has carried over into a nice spring. Incumbent center fielder Tyler Naquin was already going to be looking over his shoulder and now he could miss time with a foot injury.
  • Obviously, Erik Gonzalez is not going to unseat Francisco Lindor at shortstop, but after posting a .779 OPS with 31 doubles, 11 home runs and 53 RBI in Triple-A last season, he has a good chance of winning the utility infield job over Michael Martinez.
  • Yandy Diaz could also win himself a bench job with a strong spring after hitting .318/.408/.446 with 35 extra-base hits and 11 stolen bases between Double-A and Triple-A last year.

Colorado Rockies

9 of 30
Jeff Hoffman /
Jeff Hoffman /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. SS Brendan Rodgers (1-for-1, 1 2B)

2. RHP Jeff Hoffman (3.2 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K)

4. RHP German Marquez (3.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K)

5. OF Raimel Tapia (4-for-16, 4 R)

6. LHP Kyle Freeland (4.0 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K)

7. RHP Ryan Castellani (3.0 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K)

8. 3B Ryan McMahon (1-for-9, 1 RBI, 1 R)

9. RHP Antonio Senzatela (4.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 2 K)

Notes

  • Jeff Hoffman has jumped out to an early lead in his battle with German Marquez for the No. 5 starter job as they look to join Jon Gray, Chad Bettis, Tyler Anderson and Tyler Chatwood in the rotation.
  • Catcher Tom Murphy is ranked just outside the organization's top 10 prospects, but it's worth noting that he's gone 3-for-15 with two doubles in his pursuit of the starting backstop job.
  • There's no clear spot for Raimel Tapia on the Opening Day roster, despite the fact that he's probably a better option to be the fourth outfielder than Gerardo Parrawho is owed $18 million over the next two years.

Detroit Tigers

10 of 30
Joe Jimenez /
Joe Jimenez /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

2. LF Christin Stewart (0-for-1)

5. RHP Joe Jimenez (2.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K)

7. OF Michael Gerber (0-for-12)

9. OF JaCoby Jones (4-for-13, 3 R)

10. SS Dixon Machado (5-for-18, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 3 R)

Notes

  • Manager Brad Ausmus on Joe Jimenez's chance of making the roster, per Jason Beck of MLB.com: "Truthfully, he's a long shot for Opening Day. An extreme long shot...we think the fastball plays now. It's the secondary [pitches] that he's honing and working on."
  • JaCoby Jones is competing with Tyler Collins (2-for-11), Mikie Mahtook (1-for-13) and Anthony Gose (3-for-12, 1 2B) for playing time in center field, while Alex Presley (4-for-11, 1 2B, 1 HR) and Juan Perez (1-for-9) are also in the mix as non-roster invitees.
  • Dixon Machado may never be a standout with the bat, but he's a stellar defensive middle infielder. After hitting a respectable .266/.349/.356 in Triple-A last season, he's still capable of being a starter down the road.

Houston Astros

11 of 30
David Paulino /
David Paulino /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. RHP Francis Martes (1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K)

3. RHP David Paulino (4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 2 K)

4. OF Derek Fisher (3-for-11, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 R)

7. OF Teoscar Hernandez (1-for-14, 1 RBI, 1 R)

8. OF Ramon Laureano (2-for-8, 1 R)

Notes

  • Francis Martes retired Christian Yelich, Giancarlo Stanton and Justin Bour in order during his spring debut. He won't break camp with the team but could provide a huge shot in the arm to the starting rotation by midseason.
  • Outfielder Derek Fisher gets lost in the shuffle a bit in a deep Astros system, but after posting an .815 OPS with 21 doubles, 21 home runs and 28 stolen bases between Double-A and Triple-A last year, he's knocking on the door.
  • Teoscar Hernandez is a candidate for the fifth outfielder spot, but a shaky start to the spring could open the door for someone like Preston Tucker or Tony Kemp to win that job.

Kansas City Royals

12 of 30
Hunter Dozier /
Hunter Dozier /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. LHP Matt Strahm (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K)

2. 3B Hunter Dozier (6-for-12, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 3 R)

3. RHP Josh Staumont (3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K)

6. RHP Jake Junis (3.1 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 3 K)

7. C Chase Vallot (2-for-4, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 2 R)

8. 1B Ryan O'Hearn (1-for-6, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 3 R)

9. RHP Kyle Zimmer (2.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K)

Notes

  • The Royals have already announced that Matt Strahm will be working out of the bullpen again this coming season, but that hasn't stopped them from stretching him out like a starter this spring—he's looked sharp.
  • Hunter Dozier should find himself in a starting role of some sort next season with Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas both facing free agency, but for now he's likely headed back to Triple-A to bide his time.
  • Josh Staumont has legitimate ace potential if he can harness his electric fastball and further refine his secondary stuff. He struck out 167 batters in 123.1 innings last season but also walked 104.

Los Angeles Angels

13 of 30
Alex Meyer /
Alex Meyer /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

2. 1B Matt Thaiss (4-for-8, 1 RBI, 1 R)

4. LHP Nate Smith (4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K)

5. RHP Keynan Middleton (2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 0 K)

7. C Taylor Ward (1-for-1)

8. RHP Alex Meyer (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 1 K)

Notes

  • Matt Thaiss was viewed as one of the most polished college bats in the 2016 draft class, and it's not out of the question to think he could make his MLB debut at some point in 2017. He'll likely open the year at the High-A level but could move quickly.
  • Keynan Middleton took off last season after moving to the bullpen. The 23-year-old posted a 3.41 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 88 strikeouts in 66 innings while reaching Triple-A, putting him in position to debut in the not-too-distant future.
  • Nate Smith (25) and Alex Meyer (27) are both on the high end of the age scale as far as prospects are concerned, and they represent the best the Angels have in terms of rotational depth.

Los Angeles Dodgers

14 of 30
Cody Bellinger /
Cody Bellinger /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. 1B/OF Cody Bellinger (5-for-16, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 4 R)

3. OF Alex Verdugo (3-for-9, 1 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R)

4. 2B Willie Calhoun (1-for-1, 1 RBI 1 R)

8. RHP Brock Stewart (3.1 IP, 5 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 1 K)

9. OF Andrew Toles (3-for-16, 1 2B, 2 RBI)

Notes

  • Cody Bellinger is blocked at first base through the 2018 season by Adrian Gonzalez, so expect him to make his Dodgers debut as an outfielder. He played the outfield for the first time this spring on Saturday.
  • It remains to be seen if Andrew Toles is capable of coming close to the .314/.365/.505 line he posted in 115 plate appearances over a full season. At this point, he looks like the leading candidate for the left field job in a platoon with Franklin Gutierrez.
  • Power is the big question with Alex Verdugo, so a double and a home run in nine at-bats is good to see. The 20-year-old has the hit tool to post a strong batting average and is a standout defender with a rocket arm.

Miami Marlins

15 of 30
Brian Anderson /
Brian Anderson /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

3. 3B Brian Anderson (5-for-13, 3 2B, 2 RBI, 3 R)

4. LHP Jarlin Garcia (2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K)

5. LHP Dillon Peters (3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K)

9. RHP Drew Steckenrider (1.1 IP, 3 H, 4 ER, 2 BB, 1 K)

Notes

  • Brian Anderson emerged as the top position-player prospect in a thin Miami system after hitting .273/.360/.506 with five home runs and 12 RBI in the Arizona Fall League. The decision to re-sign Martin Prado to a three-year deal leaves him blocked at the hot corner, though.
  • Lefties Jarlin Garcia and Dillon Peters are likely both headed to Triple-A to start the season and will be "next man up" candidates in the starting rotation along with Justin Nicolino, Odrisamer Despaigne and Jeff Locke.
  • Drew Steckenrider will be a candidate for a bullpen spot at some point in 2017 after posting a 2.08 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 71 strikeouts in 52 innings and reaching Triple-A last season.

Milwaukee Brewers

16 of 30
Josh Hader /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. CF Lewis Brinson (4-for-13, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 R)

3. LHP Josh Hader (2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K)

7. 3B Lucas Erceg (2-for-5, 1 RBI)

9. SS Mauricio Dubon (1-for-6, 1 RBI, 1 R)

10. CF Brett Phillips (4-for-12, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 2 R)

Notes

  • Lewis Brinson and Josh Hader should both arrive in Milwaukee at some point in 2017, though Brinson is blocked by an intriguing breakout candidate in Keon Broxton for the starting center field job.
  • Lucas Erceg hit .327/.376/.518 with 17 doubles, nine home runs and 51 RBI in 68 games after going in the second round of the draft last June, and he could be in Double-A by midseason.
  • This looks like a make-or-break spring of sorts for Brett Phillips, at least in terms of his top-prospect status. The 22-year-old was a consensus top-100 prospect at this time a year ago but saw his stock fall considerably after a .229/.332/.397 line in Double-A.

Minnesota Twins

17 of 30
Stephen Gonsalves /
Stephen Gonsalves /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. SS Nick Gordon (2-for-5, 1 R)

2. LHP Stephen Gonsalves (3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K)

4. RHP Fernando Romero (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K)

8. LHP Adalberto Mejia (3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K)

9. RHP Felix Jorge (0.2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 K)

Notes

  • Ideally, Jose Berrios and Stephen Gonsalves would be fronting the Minnesota rotation a few years from now, as the starting staff transitions from veterans like Phil Hughes and Ervin Santana to younger, homegrown arms.
  • MLB.com on Fernando Romero: "Romero was understandably treated with kid gloves in 2016. Those gloves will come off in 2017, and with his injury behind him, Romero has the chance to reach his potential as a front-line starter."
  • Selling high on Eduardo Nunez and flipping him for left-hander Adalberto Mejia at the trade deadline last year could look like a great move by the Twins a few years from now.

New York Mets

Brandon Nimmo /
Brandon Nimmo /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. SS Amed Rosario (5-for-16, 1 2B, 3 RBI)

2. 1B Dominic Smith (2-for-15, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R)

5. RHP Robert Gsellman (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K)

7. IF Gavin Cecchini (7-for-14, 2 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 5 R)

8. OF Brandon Nimmo (10-for-21, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 3 R)

Notes

  • Amed Rosario is probably ready to handle the everyday shortstop job in the majors, but with Asdrubal Cabrera under contract for another year, the Mets have no reason to rush their No. 1 prospect, who turned 21 in November
  • Gavin Cecchini has little left to prove in the minors and he's off to a red-hot start this spring. Perhaps the injury to David Wright will open the door for him to win a roster spot.
  • Speaking of red-hot starts, what are the Mets going to do with Brandon Nimmo? The outfield situation is crowded with Yoenis Cespedes, Curtis Granderson, Jay Bruce, Juan Lagares and Michael Conforto all in the mix, but Nimmo hit .352/.423/.541 in Triple-A last year and is ready to contribute.

New York Yankees

1. SS Gleyber Torres (6-for-11, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 4 R)

2. OF Clint Frazier (6-for-16, 2 2B, 1 3B, 4 RBI, 3 R)

4. RF Aaron Judge (6-for-15, 1 3B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R)

5. SS Jorge Mateo (2-for-11, 1 2B, 1 RBI)

7. LHP Justus Sheffield (1.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K)

8. RHP Chance Adams (3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K)

9. OF Dustin Fowler (4-for-15, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 3 R)

10. 3B Miguel Andujar (4-for-14, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 3 R)

Notes

  • With Didi Gregorius playing for Team Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic, Yankees fans will be treated to a bit more of Gleyber Torres than they otherwise would have been. It's looking more and more likely that the 20-year-old sees the majors at some point in 2017.
  • Aaron Judge was by no means going to be handed the starting right field job after striking out 42 times in 95 plate appearances last season. He's made a strong case so far that he's ready for the role, though.
  • It will be interesting to see how the team handles a potentially crowded outfield situation as Clint Frazier also looks like he'll arrive in the majors in short order. An eventual trade of Brett Gardner would seem to be the most likely solution.

Oakland Athletics

20 of 30
Daniel Gossett /
Daniel Gossett /

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. SS Franklin Barreto (5-for-10, 1 RBI, 2 R)

2. LHP A.J. Puk (2.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K)

4. 3B Matt Chapman (1-for-12, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 R)

5. RHP Frankie Montas (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K)

6. RHP Jharel Cotton (4.0 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K)

7. RHP Daniel Gossett (4.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 0 K)

10. 2B Chad Pinder (2-for-8, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 R)

Notes

  • Marcus Semien and Chad Pinder may be ahead of Franklin Barreto on the organizational depth chart, but he has the highest ceiling of that group. After hitting .284/.342/.422 with 25 doubles and 11 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A, his chance is coming.
  • Frankie Montas, Jharel Cotton and Daniel Gossett could all see time in the starting rotation this coming season, and Cotton appears to have a good chance of breaking camp with a spot on the staff.
  • Finding a taker for Jed Lowrie or simply releasing him could eventually open the door for Pinder to start at second base, though his long-term future may be in a super utility role.

Philadelphia Phillies

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. SS J.P. Crawford (3-for-17, 1 2B, 1 R)

3. C Jorge Alfaro (2-for-8, 2 2B, 1 R)

4. OF Nick Williams (3-for-9, 3 RBI, 4 R)

6. OF Roman Quinn (4-for-18, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 6 R)

9. OF Dylan Cozens (4-for-16, 3 RBI, 3 R)

Notes

  • Manager Pete Mackanin on shortstop J.P. Crawford opening the season in the minors, per Matt Breen of Philly.com: "I think he needs to go back and prove he's a better hitter than he showed. I really haven't seen enough of him so far this spring. But I know one thing: He's got a lot of potential, a lot of ability."
  • The additions of Michael Saunders and Howie Kendrick alongside center fielder Odubel Herrera will allow further development time for Nick Williams, Roman Quinn, Dylan Cozens and the team's other outfield prospects. Both veterans are free agents at season's end, so they won't stand in the way long-term.
  • Former No. 1 overall pick Mark Appel (4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 5 K) is healthy once again after making just eight starts last season before undergoing surgery to remove bone spurs from his throwing elbow.

Top Prospects in MLB Camp

1. RHP Tyler Glasnow (3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K)

2. OF Austin Meadows (2-for-9, 1 2B, 1 RBI)

5. SS Kevin Newman (3-for-12, 1 RBI)

9. RHP Nick Kingham (3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K)

10. LHP Steven Brault (3.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K)

Notes

  • It's not out of the question to think Tyler Glasnow could win a rotation spot with a strong spring, even though the consensus is that he still needs to further refine his command to be a successful MLB starter. Gerrit Cole, Jameson Taillon and Ivan Nova look like the only locks for a spot on the staff at this point.
  • Not included above is the team's No. 3 prospect and the presumed starting first baseman, Josh Bell. The 24-year-old underwent minor knee surgery on Feb. 1 and is expected to miss two to four weeks, per Stephen J. Nesbitt of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
  • Nick Kingham has spent most of the past two seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery, but after 10 solid starts down the stretch last year and a nice opening to spring training, he's quickly gotten back on track.

3. RF Hunter Renfroe (4-for-15, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R)

7. IF Luis Urias (1-for-8, 1 R)

9. OF Jorge Ona (0-for-1)

Notes

  • The assumption remains that Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe will both break camp with starting spots in the San Diego outfield after both players turned in standout seasons in Triple-A last year.
  • Right-hander Phil Maton is not an organizational top-10 prospect, checking in at No. 18 on MLB.com, but he could win a bullpen job this spring. The 23-year-old posted a 1.74 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 78 strikeouts in 51.2 innings last season, and he's struck out three in three scoreless innings so far this spring.
  • Jorge Ona landed a $7 million bonus on the international free-agent market last spring, and his lone at-bat this spring was his first professional plate appearance.

8. RHP Joan Gregorio (1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K)

10. LHP Andrew Suarez (1.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 5 BB, 2 K)

Notes

  • Tyler Beede is the leading candidate to take over for Matt Cain in the starting rotation once he hits free agency next offseason. Ty Blach might be the next man up for a rotation spot this season, though, after a strong showing last September.
  • Manager Bruce Bochy on infielder Christian Arroyo, per Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area: "He showed he can handle the bat, third base or wherever we put him. It's just a matter of time with him."
  • Lefty reliever Steven Okert (No. 12 prospect) has a good chance to be the second lefty in the bullpen, and he's allowed one hit and one unearned run while striking out three in three innings this spring.

8. 3B Joe Rizzo (0-for-1)

9. RHP Dan Altavilla (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K)

10. 1B Dan Vogelbach (7-for-20, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 1 R)

Notes

  • Mitch Haniger, Dan Vogelbach and Dan Altavilla are all expected to break camp with the team, with Haniger and Vogelbach starting in left field and at first base, respectively, while Altavilla could emerge as a key setup man in the bullpen.
  • In another busy offseason of trading by general manager Jerry Dipoto, one of the more intriguing additions to the organization is 6'8" right-hander Max Povse. He has the potential for three plus pitches and there's still projection left in his 185-pound frame, giving him a middle-of-the-rotation ceiling.
  • Thyago Vieira is a name to watch as he possesses a legitimate 80-grade fastball and could be this year's version of Edwin Diaz for the relief corps. The team's No. 12 prospect has allowed two hits, three walks and one run while striking out three in two innings this spring.

5. OF Harrison Bader (5-for-16, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 2 R)

6. RHP Sandy Alcantara (3.1 IP, 8 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 5 K)

7. OF Magneuris Sierra (7-for-17, 3 2B, 1 R)

8. RHP Jack Flaherty (3.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K)

10. RHP Junior Fernandez (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K)

Notes

  • Unfortunately, absent from this list is the Cardinals' No. 1 prospect Alex Reyes, who is lost for the season to Tommy John surgery. He would have had a chance to win the No. 5 starter job or a key multi-inning bullpen role.
  • Harrison Bader might not have a clear path to the majors after the offseason addition of Dexter Fowler, but if he keeps hitting like he has this spring, he could push someone like Tommy Pham out of the picture.
  • The physical development of hard-throwing Sandy Alcantara has caught the attention of manager Mike Matheny: "He's a specimen," Matheny told Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "This guy is impressive in how he's developed over the last year. A year ago you just saw a very thin (player who) just still looked kind of like a kid. He looks like a man who has taken the next step."

8. RHP Chih-Wei Hu (3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K)

9. RHP Jacob Faria (4.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K)

10. OF Justin Williams (0-for-4)

Notes

  • Jose De Leon was hit hard in his spring debut as he looks to beat out Matt Andriese for the No. 5 starter job. Even if he doesn't win a roster spot this spring, he'll almost certainly be part of the rotation before the end of 2017.
  • Jake Bauers and Casey Gillaspie could both be ready to contribute this coming season as well, and Gillaspie could push Logan Morrison for the starting first base job before the All-Star break.
  • Jacob Faria has a terrific fastball-changeup pairing, but he's yet to develop a reliable breaking pitch to fill out his repertoire. That didn't stop him from striking out 157 in 151 innings last season, and he could help in the bullpen in the near future if the team decides to make that move.

2. LHP Yohander Mendez (3.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K)

4. 1B Ronald Guzman (0-for-10, 2 R)

7. C Jose Trevino (0-for-3)

Notes

  • Yohander Mendez rose four levels to make his MLB debut down the stretch last season, and while he may not have the ceiling of a future ace, he could be a key piece of the puzzle with a somewhat questionable rotation situation behind Cole Hamels and Yu Darvish.
  • Ariel Jurado is still just 21 years old with a total of 43.2 innings above the Single-A level, so don't read too much into his shaky start to the spring. The future remains bright.
  • With 10 players suiting up in the World Baseball Classic, including infielders Jurickson Profar, Rougned Odor and Adrian Beltre and catchers Jonathan Lucroy and Robinson Chirinos, there will be more opportunities for guys like Ronald Guzman, Andy Ibanez and Jose Trevino this spring.

5. 1B Rowdy Tellez (3-for-16, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 2 R)

6. RHP Conner Greene (2.0 IP, 6 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 3 K)

Notes

  • After a breakout 2015 season, Anthony Alford was slowed by injuries last year, missing time with a knee injury and a concussion and hitting .236 for High-A Dunedin. His ceiling is still incredibly high, though, thanks to his elite athleticism.
  • Rowdy Tellez signed as a 30th-round pick in 2013 and has quickly become one of the game's top first base prospects. He should supplant the platoon of Justin Smoak and Steve Pearce at first base in the near future.
  • Richard Urena still has work to do defensively if he hopes to stick at shortstop, and the 21-year-old will have plenty of time to smooth things out with Troy Tulowitzki signed through the 2020 season.

9. RHP A.J. Cole (4.2 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 2 K)

10. C Pedro Severino (2-for-5, 1 RBI)

Notes

  • Make no mistake, there's still plenty of talent in the Nationals system even after they shipped Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez and Dane Dunning to the Chicago White Sox.
  • That trade left Erick Fedde as the team's top pitching prospect, and he's looked sharp so far this spring. After reaching Double-A for the first time last season, he could join the MLB rotation late in 2017 if the need arises.
  • The late offseason addition of Enny Romero further crowds things for Koda Glover and A.J. Cole in the pursuit of a bullpen spot. That being said, there's still a good chance at least one of them is there on Opening Day.
