Simone Biles, David Ross Among Athletes of 2017 'Dancing with the Stars' Cast
March 1, 2017
ABC announced the cast for Season 24 of Dancing With the Stars on Wednesday, and the sports world is well-represented with Olympic gymnast Simone Biles and former Chicago Cubs catcher David Ross leading the way.
According to ABCNews.com, Biles, Ross, former Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan, NFL running back Rashad Jennings and professional bull rider Bonner Bolton are the contestants with athletic backgrounds.
As seen in the following GIF courtesy of Good Morning America on Twitter, Biles will be paired with Sasha Farber:
The 19-year-old Biles won five medals at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, including gold in the all-around, team, vault and floor exercise competitions.
Her "Final Five" teammate Laurie Hernandez won the Season 23 Dancing With the Stars title, but Biles isn't convinced her gymnastics background will put her over the top, per Bill Keveney of USA Today: "I think some of it might help, but some may work against it. In gymnastics, we're used to being upright, and Sasha told me I needed to lean forward, so it's different."
The 39-year-old Ross showed off some questionable moves during his introduction as part of the cast:
He is a two-time World Series champion and was one of the Cubs' spiritual leaders en route to ending Major League Baseball's longest title drought last season.
Ross is currently a special assistant to baseball operations for the Cubbies.
Kerrigan is a two-time Olympic medalist who is perhaps best known for being the target of an attack orchestrated by fellow figure skater Tonya Harding in 1994.
The 47-year-old Massachusetts native is a former U.S. national champion in figure skating, however, and she showed off some of her trademark grace Wednesday:
Kerrigan is also unsure how much her athletic experience will aid her in the competition, according to Keveney: "This is a challenge. We step on the ice as skaters and glide. The steps don't have to be super fast. A dancer would take 10 steps to go the distance we might do in one and make it look like gliding. It all seems so easy [watching] from my couch."
Jennings was recently released by the New York Giants, and while his NFL future is unclear, there is a precedent for football players thriving on DWTS: Emmitt Smith, Hines Ward and Donald Driver are all former winners.
Bolton won the 2007 Championship Bull Riding world title and has since found acclaim as a model.
The 24th season of Dancing With the Stars will debut March 20.
