Report: Biggest Spenders in Men's CBB 🤑
The Jayhawks entered the week ranked third, but they scored convincing victories over TCU and Texas to first clinch a share of the regular-season Big 12 title and then win it outright.
According to NCAA March Madness, Kansas joined elite company with its 13th consecutive conference championship:
Per Kansas Basketball on Twitter, junior guard Devonte Graham stressed the importance of entering the Big 12 tournament with no doubt regarding their status as the top team in the conference:
Kansas is 6-0 since a surprising loss to Iowa State at home, including victories over both West Virginia and Baylor, which undoubtedly gives the Jayhawks a No. 1-worthy resume.
Gonzaga had held the No. 1 ranking for a month, but that was entirely predicated on the fact that it was the only remaining unbeaten in Division I.
That is no longer the case, as the Zags were shocked 79-71 by BYU on Saturday and are now 29-1.
While Gonzaga traversed what was largely an easy schedule, it does have one win over Arizona and two convincing triumphs over Saint Mary's to its credit.
Although it wasn't enough to maintain the No. 1 ranking, head coach Mark Few wasn't worried about his team's status following the loss to BYU, according to the Associated Press (h/t the News Tribune): "To be 29-1 and be where we're at? We'd have taken that if offered every time."
Gonzaga wasn't the only top team to suffer a a significant upset, though, as Villanova was knocked off by Butler on Wednesday.
That represented a season sweep for Butler over the Wildcats and broke a remarkable string of dominance at home for Nova:
The defending national champions remained at No. 2 in the rankings, though, and they are still the Big East champions and in the running for a No. 1 seed for the NCAA tournament.
A team that solidified its No. 1 seed candidacy was UCLA. It avenged a home loss to Arizona earlier in the season by beating the Wildcats 77-72 on the road.
The Bruins' balance and offensive dynamism were on full display in the contest, with Lonzo Ball, TJ Leaf, Bryce Alford, Aaron Holiday and Thomas Welsh all scoring in double figures.
UCLA is a major long shot to earn a share of the Pac-12 regular-season title since it needs both Arizona and Oregon to lose their closing games, but as pointed out by UCLA Basketball on Twitter, the Bruins made history with their win at Arizona:
Last week was mostly a good one for perennial powers, as Kansas nabbed the top spot, UCLA won and North Carolina clinched at least a share of the ACC title.
The Tar Heels beat both Louisville and Pittsburgh to continue what has been a dominant run in the ACC for well over a decade, per Carolina Basketball on Twitter:
UNC's chief rival, Duke, didn't fare so well, though. Losses to Syracuse and Miami (Fla.) dropped it out of the top 10 to No. 17.
Kentucky was among the biggest beneficiaries, scoring a 76-66 win over Florida behind Malik Monk's 33 points to continue its recent ascent to No. 9.
The Wildcats are closing in on another SEC title, and depending on how they perform in the SEC tournament, they may still have an outside shot at a No. 1 NCAA tourney seed provided they receive some help.
With just one week of regular-season play remaining, there is still no singular dominant team in college basketball, but several programs are emerging as national championship contenders.
