4-Star Safety Prospect Josh Proctor Commits to Ohio State

Joseph ZuckerApr 15, 2017

The Ohio State Buckeyes strengthened their secondary in preparation for the 2018 season, securing the commitment of Josh Proctor.

The 4-star safety announced his decision to join the team on his Twitter page Saturday:

Proctor is the 15th-best safety and 130th overall player in the country, per Scout. He's also the No. 6 safety in the midland region.

Last August, the Tulsa World's Christian Favalora called Proctor and Owasso High School teammate Wayne Jones the best safety combination in the state of Oklahoma. Jones is a 3-star recruit in the class of 2018.

Listed at 6'2" and 185 pounds, Proctor is a great athlete for his position. He boasts a 4.5-second 40-yard dash, according to Hudl, and SoonerScoop's Eddie Radosevich shared a clip from his drills at the Rivals Camp Series. Proctor flashes nice agility and an ability to quickly change direction:

Proctor fits the profile of a ball-hawking safety who surveys the entire field. He's adept at reading and reacting as a play unfolds, and he has the speed to make up a lot of ground in a short amount of time.

His proficiency in pass coverage will be a nice luxury for Ohio State in case he needs to line up opposite a slot receiver or a hybrid tight end. The Buckeyes will have full confidence he can hold his own in man-to-man coverage.

In addition to his work on the gridiron, Proctor has played a starring role for Owasso on the hardwood.

"I bring my defensive mentality from the football field to the basketball court," he said last September, per OK Hoops Report. "Honestly, I can't say which sport I like the most between football and basketball, but I plan on playing both my senior year."

The fact Proctor can excel in both football and basketball further illustrates his impressive athleticism.

He could be a scary presence in the secondary when he fills out a bit more. He has the ideal height for a safety, but he'd benefit from adding a bit more weight. To put his frame in perspective, Jamal Adams—one of the top safeties in the 2017 draft class—was listed as an inch shorter and 28 pounds heavier on LSU's official site.

In another two or three years, when Proctor has built some experience and smoothed out the rougher edges of his game, he should be among the Big Ten's top safeties.
