4-Star CB Prospect Asante Samuel Jr. Commits to FSU Seminoles
Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. has pledged to play his college football at Florida State in 2018.
Samuel announced his decision to play for the Seminoles on Twitter:
Samuel comes from excellent football bloodlines. He is the son of former NFL cornerback Asante Samuel, who was a four-time Pro Bowler and was named to the All-Pro first team in 2007.
Any accusations of nepotism would be totally off-base for the newest Samuel, who has enough hype on his own as one of the best recruits in 2018. He's a 4-star prospect who is ranked as the No. 8 cornerback from his home state of Florida and No. 31 cornerback in the nation, per Scout.com.
Listed at 5'10" and 165 pounds, Samuel has a solid cornerback frame. He's also got a dazzling scouting report to back it up.
"Samuel is a true cover corner that's technically sound as well," per Scout.com's scouting report. "Samuel is also light on his feet with the ability to recover in a hurry and change direction. Size will never be on this defensive back's side, but he can really flip his hips and take away his opponent down the field. Samuel is discipline (sic) and rarely falls for double moves as well."
Given those extensive credentials, it's hardly a surprise Samuel would choose to attend Florida State for the next four years.
Even though the Seminoles continue to chase their national title success in 2013, head coach Jimbo Fisher is not lacking for talent to keep his team among the best in the country.
One reason for Fisher's success is his ability to keep Florida's top talent at home. Brendan Sonnone of 247Sports found that between 2010-17 the Seminoles reeled in 23 5-star prospects, with 14 coming from in-state.
Samuel is the kind of high-upside talent the Seminoles expect to land, and his decision to stay close to home gives them a foundation piece to challenge for another national championship very soon.
Samuel is one of the rare game-changers at defensive back every team in the nation wants to build around. He's got some areas to improve, notably with his ability to get after opposing quarterbacks, but there's nothing to stop him from reaching his full potential.
By committing to Florida State, Samuel is making a clear statement that he believes this is his best chance to compete on a national stage and challenge for the top prize in college football while also honing his skills to potentially reach the heights his father once did.
