In other Reds news, Tottenham Hotspur starlet Dele Alli has revealed Liverpool tempted him to move to Anfield before his switch to White Hart Lane, using a meeting with Steven Gerrard as a bargaining chip for the prodigious midfielder.
Alli told BBC's Football Focus (h/t Rory O'Callaghan of MailOnline) he agreed to travel north to discuss a transfer with the Reds, and was promised an audience with Gerrard—who he declared is his hero. However, Gerrard did not to show up for the arranged meeting, and Alli opted to join Spurs for £5 million in 2015. The England international revealed Gerrard failed to materialise as he was "asleep," scuppering the chance for Alli to meet his idol.
Alli said:
"At the time when I was at MK there was contact with Liverpool before I signed for Tottenham but that was before we'd even spoke to Tottenham, I think it was six months before.
We went up there and I think they knew that Steven Gerrard was my hero so they said he was going to come down and meet me but when I got there he was asleep apparently.
I think he had a game the next day though so I understand.
"

According to O'Callaghan, former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted he was close to capturing the player who has developed into England's great midfield hope in the past 12 months. Alli was keen to tread the same path as Gerrard to the top of the Premier League but after the meeting failed to happen, the deal with MK Dons collapsed—opening the door for Spurs.
Rodgers revealed:
"He [Alli] wanted to come to Liverpool.
It was just then about getting the deal done with the club and unfortunately it never got done but at that point, that Saturday evening, we thought we had him in, it was done.
He stayed on then, the deal didn't get done between the clubs and eventually he went to Tottenham, which was frustrating and disappointing really.
"

Alli would have been the perfect long-term replacement for Gerrard at the heart of the Reds' midfield, but at the time the player was just a burgeoning talent with no guarantee he would develop into an international-class individual.
The 20-year-old experienced a breakout season last term, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists in 28 Premier League starts, according to WhoScored.com.
Liverpool have changed in style under Klopp, and the immediate need to find a direct replacement for Gerrard's combative talents have decreased.
However, Alli would have provided goals and assists from the centre of the park, and the deal would have allowed the player the chance to develop next to his hero at Anfield.
