Lamar Jackson vs. Kentucky: Stats, Highlights and Twitter Reaction

Tim DanielsNov 26, 2016

Louisville superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson failed to wrap up the Heisman Trophy race Saturday, committing four turnovers as the Cardinals were stunned by rival and four-touchdown underdog Kentucky, 41-38, at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.

Even though Jackson put together another solid performance—accounting for 452 total offensive yards and four touchdowns—his team's struggles late in the regular season could leave the door open in the Heisman race for Oklahoma's Baker Mayfield or Dede Westbrook, Clemson's Deshaun Watson or Michigan's Jabrill Peppers.

Here's a look at Jackson's final stat line against the nation's 78th-ranked defense:

The dynamic sophomore was asked about the Heisman Trophy potentially slipping out of his grasp after the Cardinals' loss to Houston last week. He replied by discussing the importance of getting back in the win column, per Jeff Greer of the Courier-Journal.

"I don't focus on that," Jackson said. "I focus on winning. I don't focus on the Heisman or anything like that. I just go out there and play with my team and help them win games."

Regardless of his motivation, the Florida native looked like a man on a mission on the Cardinals' first drive of Saturday's contest. He led the way as Louisville covered 84 yards in a shade over two minutes and needed just five plays to score a quick touchdown.

Jackson finished the drive with a 19-yard touchdown scamper. The Louisville Cardinal provided an in-stadium look at the scoring play:

Louisville Football noted the TD allowed him to set a new ACC record:

ESPN pointed out the rushing score also moved him into some rare air:

After Kentucky grabbed a 14-7 lead, Jackson guided Louisville to an immediate response with a 12-play, 70-yard drive to tie the game. He finished it with a laser over a jumping Wildcats defender to Reggie Bonnafon for an 18-yard score.

The other Cardinals touchdown before halftime came on a nice play design. Jackson made a quick sprint toward the middle of the field to stretch the defense before delivering a quick shovel pass to Cole Hikutini, who took care of the rest from 24 yards out.

Even ESPN Radio Lexington had to give props to Louisville for that play:

Louisville Football passed along Jackson's halftime numbers:

His first major mistake of the afternoon came late in the third quarter. Kentucky had just tied the contest with a field goal, and on the first play of the next drive Mike Edwards picked off Jackson on a poor throw to the outside.

Bleacher Report's Barrett Sallee commented on the error:

Kentucky took full advantage. The Wildcats converted the turnover into seven points when Dorian Baker made an acrobatic catch to complete a 35-yard connection with Stephen Johnson to take a 38-31 lead early in the fourth.

Jackson and Co. tried to answer, quickly moving the ball into the red zone. But a second straight drive ended in an interception when the quarterback's frozen rope directed toward Hikutini deflected off his hands and into the waiting arms of Kentucky defensive back Blake McClain.

Bryan Fischer of College Football Talk noted you couldn't blame the QB for the drop:

Jackson rebounded to get the Cardinals back level midway through the final quarter. He accounted for 49 of the team's 55 yards, including 36 with his legs, during a scoring drive that ended with him twisting his way into the end zone.

It looked like he was ready to drive Louisville in for another touchdown, and perhaps one final Heisman moment, as the Cardinals had the ball inside the 10 with two minutes left. But Jackson fumbled the ball on a quarterback keeper and gave it back to the Wildcats.

Instead of playing for overtime by running out the clock, Kentucky pushed the ball downfield, and a 29-yard completion from Johnson to Jeff Badet validated the decision. Austin MacGinnis made a 47-yard field goal to give the underdogs the lead with 18 seconds left.

The Wildcats intercepted a last-second heave by Jackson to cap the upset.

Clay Travis of Fox Sports Radio commented on the Heisman implications:

Freddie Maggard of Kentucky Sports Radio believes Jackson is still worthy, though:

Jackson has now submitted his final resume for Heisman Trophy consideration. It includes 51 total touchdowns, 3,390 passing yards and 1,538 rushing yards to go along with the Cardinals' 9-3 final regular-season record.

Although he posted some eye-popping statistics, there could be some questions about his inability to lead Louisville into the College Football Playoff, given the late-season losses. That represents an avenue for hope among the other players in the conversation for the top individual honor.

Jackson built such a large advantage in the race during the early portion of the season that he should still be considered the slight favorite, though. He'll find out his fate when the winner is announced in New York City on Saturday, Dec. 10.
