Jack Sears Flips Commitment from Duke to USC: Details and Reaction
Top quarterback prospect Jack Sears has changed his commitment from the Duke Blue Devils to the USC Trojans, per Tom Loy of 247Sports.
"I have the utmost respect and admiration for Coach [David] Cutcliffe, the entire coaching staff and Duke University," Sears said Sunday. "I wish them nothing but success in the future. I am now a USC Trojan and look forward to starting classes in January."
The 4-star recruit is the No. 11-ranked quarterback in the 2017 class, according to Scout.com. He originally committed to Duke over a handful of elite programs in August, but the San Clemente, California, native decided he would rather stay closer to home.
At 6'3", 205 pounds, Sears has good size for the position to go with above-average athleticism and throwing ability. Duke, which has had a disappointing 2016 campaign after three straight seasons with at least eight wins, expected him to be a big part of its 2017 recruiting class. The Blue Devils defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels on Thursday, but it was their first conference win of the year and helped the team improve to only 4-6 overall.
Meanwhile, USC has overcome a 1-3 start to win six games in a row under head coach Clay Helton. The coaching staff has also shown its ability to develop quarterbacks with freshman Sam Darnold performing well.
Sears is the seventh recruit and only quarterback in the Trojans' 2017 class.
