La Liga Results 2016 Week 11: Final Scores and Updated Table After Saturday

James DudkoNov 5, 2016

Atletico Madrid missed the chance to draw level on points with leaders Real Madrid in La Liga, after Real Sociedad beat them 2-0 at Anoeta on Saturday.

Atleti gave away two penalties and mustered little going forward during what could prove to be a costly day. Now leaders Real and second-place Barcelona can create some distance if they both win on Sunday.

At the bottom, Granada earned a useful point at home against struggling Deportivo La Coruna but still find themselves six points adrift of safety.

Atletico Slip in Title Race

A trip to Anoeta was always going to be tough for title-chasing Atleti. Still, the 2013/14 champions could rue their 2-0 defeat to Sociedad if rivals Los Blancos and Barca both win on Sunday.

Atletico have handed away the initiative to the top two after former Arsenal forward Carlos Vela tore them apart. The Mexican attacker tucked away a penalty for the opener, before winning his side another spot-kick when he was felled in the box.

Willian Jose stepped up to convert this time, but it was Vela who proved to be the ultimate star of the show, as WhoScored.com detailed:

The more he impressed, the more confident Vela became. ESPN's Dermot Corrigan noticed how a buoyant Vela wasn't afraid to turn on the style against Atleti:

Vela has always been a terrific talent, but his temperament has often been questionable. It's why the 27-year-old never made the grade with the Gunners.

However, Vela has always preferred life in Spain. Having him happy again is vital for Sociedad, according to Sid Lowe of the Guardian:

What stood out most about the game may not have been Vela's flair or Atletico's stunted performance going forward. Instead, it was Real boss Eusebio's bold tactics, a strategy that BBC Sport's Andy West applauded:

Sociedad's willingness to play two up top also hinted at a lack of a fear factor regarding Madrid's forward line. Atleti have some talent in attack, particularly winger Yannick Ferreira Carrasco and forward Antoine Griezmann.

Yet the lack of a standout centre-forward and a bold midfielder sometimes hampers this team. So do the pragmatic tactics of manager Diego Simeone.

Atletico's wobbles, which include a 1-0 defeat to Sevilla in their last away game in the league, are best summed up by a sudden defensive frailty, courtesy of OptaJose:

Life at the foot of the table is tough, but at least Granada secured a useful point thanks to defender David Lomban. He turned in a shot just nine minutes from time to leave Deportivo La Coruna frustrated.

The visitors had gone in front just after the hour mark when Florin Andone slotted in a left-footed shot. His classy finish rounded off a smart and swift break, but Deportivo remain just a point off the bottom three.

Christian Santos scored from the spot inside the final 15 minutes to help Alaves secure a vital away win in Osasuna. Alaves won by just a single goal at El Sadar to continue their fine recent run in Pamplona:

Finally, yet another penalty helped Las Palmas beat Eibar in Gran Canaria. Jonathan Viera scored from the spot deep into four minutes of stoppage time to move Las Palmas above Eibar into seventh.

Barcelona's trip to Sevilla could mean Atletico get away with dropping two priceless points. However, Los Blancos are a good bet to beat Leganes at the Santiago Bernabeu and leave Atleti trailing by six.
