Champions League Results 2016: Latest Tables, Top Scorers After Wednesday Games
Barcelona's Lionel Messi remains the top scorer in the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League with seven goals after a pulsating night of action on Wednesday in the competition.
In the match of the evening, Real Madrid drew 3-3 with Legia Warsaw at an empty Polish Army Stadium; the holders led 2-0, then trailed 3-2, before Mateo Kovacic spared their blushes with a late equaliser.
Elsewhere, there were goals aplenty in Sevilla, as the La Liga side hammered Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 at home. Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen clinched a crucial win over Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium, while Leicester City are still yet to concede in the tournament, having played out a 0-0 draw away to FC Copenhagen.

Messi Can’t Save Barca’s Blushes

Given he netted a hat-trick against them in the previous meeting in the Champions League, Manchester City fans wouldn’t have been too surprised to see Messi find the net again at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.
The diminutive genius was on hand to finish a slick counter-attacking move from his team, giving him his seventh goal in the competition already. As noted by OptaJose, he loves playing against City too:
While it was an ideal start for Barcelona, they were overwhelmed by the hosts afterwards. Ilkay Gundogan equalised before the break and Kevin de Bruyne hammered in a second-half free-kick to put City in the lead. Gundogan then added the gloss to a fine performance with his second goal of the game.
Like Messi, Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil followed up a hat-trick in Week 3 with another goal in Week 4. But while the Barcelona man’s strike ultimately meant little, the German playmaker scored the winner in a 3-2 victory over Ludogorets in Bulgaria.

And what a goal. After lofting the ball over the goalkeeper, Ozil showed immaculate composure to feint twice, leave two defenders on their backside and calmly slot home. Bleacher Report’s Clark Whitney suggested the poise showcased by the Arsenal man was Messi-esque in its execution:
Alongside Ozil on four goals is Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani and Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich.
The latter was in supreme form on Tuesday, as his two goals helped the German side secure a vital win at PSV Eindhoven. It means they keep the pressure up on group leaders Atletico Madrid, who still have to visit the Allianz Arena.

Though Bayern have not been at their fluent best at times this term, Lewandowski has remained such a potent threat in the final third, with 14 goals already in all competitions. Per the tournament’s official Twitter feed, the Polish international loves the Champions League:
While plenty of players have starred in the final third, there have been some admirable performances at the back too. The most notable of which have come from tournament debutants Leicester City.
The English champions may have seen their perfect start to the group stage slip in Copenhagen, but they remain unbending in their defensive resolve. As noted here by Squawka Football, no team has ever kept four clean sheets in their first four Champions League games:
Real Madrid man Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to find the net again in a European match, meaning he remains on 98 goals in continental club competitions—95 of which have come in the Champions League. However, the forward did catch a brilliant view of Gareth Bale’s stunning first-minute opener for Madrid that set up a remarkable contest.
Messi is now on 90 Champions League goals in his career after his magnificent exploits in the competition so far. The Portuguese, as a result, may be looking over his shoulder a little nervously as the duo race towards the three-figure landmark.
