Ryan Lochte's Lawyers' Bid to Have Rio Case Dismissed Reportedly Rejected
A Rio judge reportedly rejected a bid by Ryan Lochte's lawyers to have the Olympic swimmer's criminal case dismissed, according to TMZ Sports.
The judge then handed the case off to the Ministry of Justice, a higher court, according to TMZ. Lochte is expected to be fined more than $11,000 for his role in filing a false police report.
Lochte and fellow United States swimmer Jimmy Feigen were each charged with filing a false police report after they claimed they were held up and robbed at gunpoint at a gas station in Rio. But surveillance video of the incident allegedly showed Lochte, Feigen, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger vandalized the gas station's bathroom and were stopped by armed security guards.
Lochte apologized for his actions in August and said he "overexaggerated" the robbery story.
Feigen agreed to donate $10,800 to a Brazilian charity in exchange for avoiding jail time, per TMZ Sports.
Lochte, 32, has competed in four Olympic Games. He's a 12-time medalist (six gold, three silver, three bronze) and won the 4x200-meter freestyle relay at the 2016 Rio Games alongside Conor Dwyer, Townley Haas and Michael Phelps.
