Arkansas vs. Auburn: Score and Twitter Reaction

Mike ChiariOct 22, 2016

The No. 21 Auburn Tigers continued their ground-game dominance Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama, as they throttled the No. 17 Arkansas Razorbacks 56-3.

Auburn racked up 543 rushing yards in the contest, which marked a school record for most rushing yards in an SEC regular-season game, per Auburn Football. The 53-point margin of victory was also the Tigers' largest margin of victory ever against a ranked team, according to the ESPN broadcast.

Sophomore running back Kamryn Pettway led the way with a career-high 192 yards on 27 carries to go along with two touchdowns, while fellow sophomore Stanton Truitt added 78 yards and two rushing scores on eight carries along with a receiving touchdown.

The Tigers improved 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the SEC with the victory, while Arkansas fell to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

It was apparent in the early going that Saturday's game would be a tough one for the Razorbacks, as they allowed freshman wide receiver Eli Stove to score from 78 yards out on a jet-sweep on Auburn's first play from scrimmage, as seen in this video courtesy of ESPN:

Following a punt on Arkansas' second possession, the Tigers drove the ball 91 yards on 10 plays in less than three minutes to take a 14-0 lead.

The key play on the drive was a 41-yard scamper by sophomore quarterback Sean White, who made a perfect decision to keep the ball on a read-option:

After that run, Pettway pounded the ball four consecutive times and finished the drive off with a powerful, nine-yard touchdown run.

Pettway bowled over an Arkansas defender en route to the end zone, which prompted ESPN's Derek Tyson to compare the 240-pounder to one of the biggest and most physical running backs in NFL history:

Auburn's first-quarter dominance was far from over, as the defense gave the offense fantastic field position on the ensuing drive.

Junior quarterback Austin Allen fumbled the football while attempting to pump-fake on the run, and freshman defensive lineman Marlon Davidson's recovery set the Tigers up at the Razorbacks 27-yard line.

The Tigers needed only two plays to find paydirt again, as Truitt scored on a 20-yard run to put Auburn up 21-0:

Allen was sacked for the third time in the game on the next series, which prompted Bleacher Report's Barrett Sallee to comment on the fact that the Arkansas signal-caller was constantly under fire:

Auburn carried its 21-0 advantage into the second quarter, and Tom Fornelli of CBS Sports observed that Arkansas' difficult schedule leading up to the game may have played a role in its lopsided nature:

The Tigers had a bye week after an impressive victory over Mississippi State two weeks ago, which spelled trouble for the Razorbacks, as Auburn improved to 6-0 under head coach Gus Malzahn coming off a bye.

Auburn's aggressive defense led to a scary moment for Arkansas fans later in the second quarter, as Allen was forced to leave the game following a low hit from junior defensive lineman Carl Lawson.

Allen proved his toughness by returning to the game shortly thereafter, but it did little to change the momentum.

With less than two minutes remaining before halftime, Auburn extended its lead to 28-0 when White connected with Truitt for a 45-yard passing score, as seen in this GIF courtesy of SEC Network:

The Tigers were firing on all cylinders offensively, and Sallee attributed it largely to a change at offensive coordinator, as Malzahn gave up play-calling duties earlier in the season:

Arkansas did manage to get on the board before the end of the first half, as senior kicker Adam McFain made a 54-yard field goal before the gun sounded.

The damage had already been done, however, and it was primarily thanks to the huge gap in run-game production between the two sides, as pointed out by Bo Mattingly of ESPN Radio Arkansas:

Auburn made a huge statement in the first half, and ESPN Radio's Danny Kanell argued it was an even bigger deal than what its chief rival accomplished Saturday:

Alabama defeated Texas A&M to remain undefeated, and although it isn't until the final game of the regular season, Auburn's performance suggests the Iron Bowl could be a huge game between two highly ranked teams.

Despite Arkansas knowing that Auburn intended to continue running the football, it struggled to keep the Tigers from picking up first downs.

That was evident during a third-quarter drive that ate up over five minutes and ended in a one-yard touchdown run by White to make the score 35-3.

White orchestrated a 15-play drive that covered 86 yards, and 11 of those plays were runs.

Allen was intercepted on a desperation fourth-down pass on the next drive by freshman defensive back Javaris Davis, which set the stage for yet another Auburn touchdown near the end of the third quarter.

The Tigers ran the ball seven straight times, culminating in a 23-yard scoring run for Pettway, which marked his second touchdown of the day.

As seen in this vine courtesy of SportsCenter, Auburn legend Bo Jackson approved of Pettway's big-time performance:

Auburn continued to embarrass Arkansas on the ensuing drive when Truitt ran it in from 31 yards out untouched thanks to spectacular blocking from the Tigers offensive line to make it 49-3:

With the Tigers dominating and Allen ailing, Arkansas opted to pull its star quarterback from the game early in the fourth quarter in favor of freshman Ty Storey, which was likely a smart move as the Auburn pass-rushers continued to attack.

The Auburn offense wasn't done either, as freshman running back Kam Martin got in on the act with just over four minutes remaining in the game by busting a 51-yard touchdown run down the sideline to make it 56-3.

After that exclamation point, both teams were finally content to run out the clock on a game that was no contest from start to finish.

While Alabama is clearly in the driver's seat in the SEC West, Auburn kept itself in the race by pulling to within a half-game of Texas A&M for second in the division and within a game-and-a-half of the Crimson Tide for first.

Conversely, Arkansas played its way out of contention with its third conference loss, and it limps into a much-needed bye week before two more consecutive clashes with Top 25 teams in Florida and LSU.

Auburn has a difficult date with Ole Miss on tap next week, but if it can continue to run the ball like it did Saturday, it may be able to keep quarterback Chad Kelly and the Rebels' high-powered offense off the field.

The Tigers then have three straight games against unranked opponents before the highly anticipated Iron Bowl, which means they have a legitimate chance to play spoiler and put themselves in position for a huge bowl game despite losing two of their first three games.

Postgame Reaction

After one of the most thoroughly dominant performances in college football this season, Malzahn showered his team with praise and put it high on his list of overall showings during his time at Auburn, according to James Crepea of AL.com:

Malzahn was especially impressed with the manner in which his defense was able to lock down the Arkansas running game, per Auburn Gold Mine:

The head coach also gave a ton of credit to his offensive coordinator for drawing up a gameplan that put 56 points on the board:

In the aftermath of such an incredible showing, Malzahn felt as though the tempo and tone of the game was ideal for his team:

The same can't be said for Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema, who saw his team get thoroughly outclassed in every aspect.

According to Gene Dumont of Razorback Nation, Bielema expressed worry during his postgame press conference:

He also blamed a lack of success stopping the run on the defense failing to be disciplined in sealing up potential running lanes:

Per Jason Kersey of SEC Country, Bielema intends to get right to work in hopes of turning things around:

The Razorbacks have the benefit of a bye next week, but Bielema will have to find answers quick with tough games against Florida and LSU on the horizon.
