World Grand Prix of Darts 2016: Winner, Prize Money, Final Scores and Results

Rob BlanchetteOct 8, 2016

Michael van Gerwen completely dismantled Gary Anderson in style in the final of the 2016 World Grand Prix of Darts in Dublin on Saturday night.

Mighty Mike collected the £100,000 champion's prize after prevailing 5-2, playing darts from another planet as he became a three-time winner of the tournament.

World champion Anderson was never at the races, as the colossal Dutch talent performed at his very best standard.

3 Dart Analyst compared the two players at the advent of the final:

Mighty Mike set off at an astonishing pace, claiming the opening set in minutes as Anderson struggled to find his groove. The Dutchman took all three legs as the Scotsman was stuck in his blocks.

Van Gerwen displayed a focussed aggression as he targeted the trebles, but Anderson slowly found form as he hit back-to-back maximums at the oche.

The crowd sang Anderson's name as they offered the Flying Scotsman encouragement, but the world No. 1 displayed steel as he grabbed the second set, despite missing a wonderful checkout of 167 on the bull.

Sky Bet pointed towards Van Gerwen's astonishing average:

3 Dart Analyst highlighted Van Gerwen's ruthless start:

The Dutchman took yet another set with double 16, collecting his ninth leg compared to Anderson's two, and the Scot appeared shellshocked as he trailed in Van Gerwen's wake.

However, Anderson expanded his confidence as his opponent suffered a small blip, and the world champion took three legs in a row, finishing with double tops to make it 3-1.

The fifth set saw Van Gerwen ease off the gas, with Anderson finding double 10 to claim a second set on the bounce, but the brief success just annoyed the Dutchman, and he once again pushed to take a stranglehold of the encounter.

Mighty Mike whitewashed the following set as he moved through the gears at a frightening pace, and Anderson's mini comeback was crushed.

Van Gerwen closed out the final set 3-1, as the crowd screamed their approval, and the current world No. 1 finished on 160 to claim the title.

It was one of the most one-sided finals in recent years, and Anderson could not get near Van Gerwen, despite his obvious pedigree as reigning world champion.

The Dutch master was unplayable in Dublin on Saturday night, and no player on the planet can compete with him when he is in this mood.
