Lionel Messi Reportedly Wants Release Clause in New Barcelona Contract
Barcelona star Lionel Messi reportedly wants his new contract with the Blaugrana to include a special release clause that would ensure he can leave for Argentinian club Newell’s Old Boys at some point in the future.
That's according to Diario Gol (h/t AS English), who emphasise the 29-year-old has no intention of leaving Barcelona anytime soon. He hasn't made a secret of his desire to return to Argentina before he retires, however, and a clause aimed for Newell's would make sure the Catalans can't stop him when he does.

All La Liga contracts contain a buy-out clause, which is mandatory, but in the case of top stars like Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the agreed fee is so high no club would ever even consider triggering it.
Per the report, Messi's new contract is a top priority for Barcelona. It will be the eighth deal the Argentina international signs with the club, and if the contract does include a clause for Newell's, there's a good chance it could be his last.
He still has several years at the top level left in him, judging by his performances in 2016. Here's a look at some of his highlights:
Per Transfermarkt.co.uk, injuries have become an issue since the start of last season, however, and he's currently sidelined with another knock.
Messi remains one of the world's best players and a key component of manager Luis Enrique's Barcelona side, but the club has long known he dreams of a return to Rosario, so this rumoured clause shouldn't come as a huge shock.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner won't leave until he has achieved everything he had dreamed of with the Blaugrana, and in all likelihood, fans will be able to watch him at the Camp Nou for many years still.
