Recap
After losing the opening leg of the match, Thornton claimed three in succession—starting with a 125 checkout—to draw first blood against Stephen Bunting, but the 31-year-old mounted an impressive comeback.
A ton followed by a double 16—which clinically punished a missed attempt at double tops—sent Bunting on his way to levelling the match at two sets apiece, and by then, all the momentum was with the challenger.
After taking just 12 darts to secure the third leg of the second set, he needed only one more to open his account in the third set. Thornton was able to pull one back, but it would be in vain, as Bunting produced his fourth 180 before capitalising on more missed doubles from the Scot, as PDC Darts showed:
Freelance sports journalist Rob Maul noted the contrast in the champion's performance this year compared with last year:
In the day's other big upset, Jenkins came from behind to record a memorable win over Wade.
The Machine looked to be cruising as he took the first set and went a leg and a break up in the second, but an excellent 90 checkout turned the match around for Jenkins.
The Bull proceeded to force a decider by taking two further legs in succession. Wade twice went ahead in the tense final set, only to be pegged back by Jenkins on both occasions, before the latter finished off 77 on double tops to take the match, as Sky Sports Darts shared:

Lewis began in dominant fashion as he romped to a 3-0 victory in the opening set against Jelle Klaasen, taking out 116 and 157 along the way, via PDC Darts:
The Dutchman earned his first leg to go ahead in the second set, and the pair traded holds of throw to produce a deciding fifth, in which Klaasen crashed home 105 after Lewis had missed a match throw on double 13.
Jackpot had the edge in the final set as he regained his composure, though, dropping just one leg before finishing on double 16, via Sky Sports Darts:
Lewis complimented his opponent after the match:
Two-time world champion Anderson fared even better as he saw out one of just three straight-sets victories on Sunday.
The Flying Scotsman didn't drop a single leg in the first set, in which he averaged an impressive 98, according to PDC Darts.
His performance in the second set to secure the victory was similarly remarkable, per Live Darts:
He will face Kyle Anderson in the next round following his victory over Cristo Reyes. If the Scot performs as he did on Sunday, it's difficult to see the Australian progressing.
On Monday, the likes of Michael van Gerwen, Phil Taylor and Peter Wright will all be in action as the competition continues with the remainder of the first round.
