Jaylon Johnson to Utah: Utes Land 4-Star CB Prospect
Jaylon Johnson parlayed his status as one of the nation's most heralded high school cornerbacks into a commitment to Utah on Friday night, according to Alex Stark of SB Nation.
Prep Recruiters first relayed news of Johnson's decision on senior night:
The 4-star cornerback has been tracked by elite programs for quite a while, and it's not hard to see why. Johnson is Scout's 59th-ranked player overall and sixth-ranked cornerback among all 2017 recruits.
The Fresno, California, native is also the second-ranked cornerback in the state of California as well as the second-ranked corner in the entire West region.
Johnson's speed has long been one of his greatest assets, and he put the burners on display at the Oakland, California, regional of The Opening in May 2016. According to Bleacher Report's Sanjay Kirpalani, Johnson stole the show by winning the fastest man contest with a 4.49-second 40-yard dash.
Johnson proceeded to capture MVP for defensive backs at the showcase, and that honor earned him a ticket to The Opening in July.
"I think I showed that I’m a competitor," Johnson said, per Kirpalani. "I think nobody really knew how good I was, but to come out here and show what I can do, it’s definitely a good feeling and shows that I’m one of the best athletes in the country."
At 6'2" and 185 pounds, Johnson also has the size necessary to cover physical outside receivers as he gets set to transition to the collegiate level.
Johnson's ability to blanket some of the nation's best receivers receivers will be tested, but his length, strength and speed should give him a solid foundation to build upon as he continues to evolve as a shutdown presence.
