Cancer and Sports Part 9 Of Many
Yesterday we watched the games for about 5 hours in the hospital room with Jeff. Seeing him silent, not checking fantasy points really pulled at me. It is amazing that the man who was screaming at the TV just two weeks before could barely watch and was dozing off during the games. I feel powerless but do have a few tricks up my sleeve. Unfortunately, I woke up with a bad cold and a fever so will have to advocate from home.
One of the best and smartest things I have learned as a former health care professional is to always make sure the nurses like you enough to always be available by phone and love your loved one (almost as much as you do). This is the case right now and the hospital is most cooperative and being very good to Jeff. He is feeling a little better today (well enough to check his scores on his Blackberry) and called late last night to find his standing on the Evil Monkey pool. It was not good and he just said okay and hung up. Tonight is Monday night Football and while I am out of it, he is not. it is a big game - Vikings vs Packers and although I will not be there watching the game in Jeff's room, I will be calling to see how much of the game he is watching. That is my indicator.
Eagles having a bye did not help. Trotter being resigned did help because it is the second chance thing for a good guy ...now I want to reach Trot, one of Jeff's hero's (and his Nephrologist's hero as well). I am hoping that being in the sports biz ( peripherally for the moment) will get me to one or two of Jeff's heroes to make a quick call and say - EAT! It is a wife thing and he is not taking nourishment so perhaps a hero will make him take a sip of ice tea or a drink an Ensure (yuk). These guys always call little dying kids, a good thing too, but what about the hard core fans who are battling the same disease? Makes me wonder - for kids it is a thrill (and Make a Wish is one of the best charities around) maybe it would do the same for a grownup? Who is there for guys and gals in their 30s,40s, 50s or 60s -who may have followed a team or player throughout their entire life? A little food for thought.
Today, I am out of the picture and feeling guilty - if I visit, I may cheer Jeff up and finish him off (so to speak) which leaves me stuck in bed on cold meds and antibiotics so tomorrow we can sit in his room and discuss the Monday night game. maybe he will even give me some unsolicited advice on my fantasy team...which I will gladly accept- but do what I want anyway LOL
