Analysis

LONDON, ENGLAND - SEPTEMBER 25: James Ward-Prowse of Southampton (16) celebrates with team mates as he scores their third goal during the Premier League match between West Ham United and Southampton at London Stadium on September 25, 2016 in London, Engl

Southampton's 3-0 win over West Ham didn't have major implications for the top of the Premier League table, but it continued West Ham's shocking start. A year after finishing seventh and flirting with a top-four finish, West Ham have now taken just three points in six games and find themselves in the relegation zone.

Henry Winter of the Times thinks everyone from the manager through the team's star player needs to take ownership for the dreadful start:

Meanwhile, Saturday was a big day for the clubs in the running for the Premier League table. Arsenal were excellent, beating Chelsea 3-0 behind goals from Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Mesut Ozil.

"It's one of the best performances in recent years," Arsene Wenger said in his post-match comments, per the Evening Standard.

He added: "We have had to deal with some inconvenient facts... We couldn't beat Chelsea for years. To get that out of the system was at stake today."

It was a reminder of how deadly Arsenal can be when they are healthy and when they play their best. It was also a reminder of just how talented both Sanchez and Ozil are, as the pair truly bossed the game. Less noticeable, but just as important, was the centre-back pair of Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi utterly neutralizing Diego Costa.

The other perspective, however, is that Chelsea were poor. Gary Cahill's dreadful turnover set up Sanchez's first goal, Eden Hazard's inability to track back on defense was a huge factor in the second and Chelsea got caught way up the field on the third, though take nothing away from Sanchez and Ozil's beautiful, weaving counter-attack.

It's clear that Antonio Conte's men need to adjust to a new manager, and it's even clearer that the defense is a work in progress. John Terry may be hurt, but Cahill and Branislav Ivanovic have become downright liabilities in defense. The Blues have conceded nine goals in their past four games across all competitions, and losses to Arsenal and Liverpool have surely left their supporters wondering if they'll be able to compete with the league's elite teams this season.

There is little worry at the Etihad, however, as Manchester City remained perfect on the season with a 3-1 win over Swansea. Perfection is to be aspired toward when Pep Guardiola is the manager, after all.

It's not all roses for the league leaders, however, as Kevin De Bruyne—who has been superb on the season—could be out for the next month after picking up a hamstring injury on Saturday. It's a major blow for the Citizens, as De Bruyne has arguably been the club's best player early in the season.

Their Manchester rivals, meanwhile, were incredibly impressive in a 4-1 win over struggling Leicester City. Most noticeable was Wayne Rooney starting on the bench, and Juan Mata playing marvelous football in the No. 10 role. Paul Pogba seemed more comfortable with Mata in front of him, Zlatan Ibrahimovic benefitted from having Mata behind him and Marcus Rashford thrived on the wing.

It was a strong case for Mata to start in that role, and something for Jose Mourinho to ponder. Benching an influential veteran has never been an issue for Mourinho, of course, and in this case it might be just what United needed to further solidify their identity after an offseason with so much turnover on the roster. And an impact sub role for the ageing Rooney may revitalize his form, which has certainly dipped in recent seasons.

And then there was Liverpool, as the Reds continued their offensive onslaught of the Premier League with a 5-1 win over Hull City. That's now 16 goals in six matches for Liverpool, with only City (18) scoring more. Few clubs are more threatening on the attack than Jurgen Klopp's men, even if the defense can be shaky at times.

Finally, and quietly, Tottenham remained second in the league with a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough. Spurs didn't have much turnover this summer and the continuity has played to their favor early in the campaign. They'll be tested next week in the highlight match of the weekend slate, facing Manchester City.

Nothing beats a matchup between the top two teams on the table. The contest will certainly be an important measuring stick for both clubs.
