Donnie Nietes vs. Edgar Sosa: Winner, Scorecard and Reaction

Adam WellsSep 24, 2016

In a clash between two knockout artists, Donnie Nietes came out victorious against Edgar Sosa on Saturday via unanimous decision to win the vacant WBO intercontinental flyweight title in his debut at 112 pounds.

According to BoxingScene's Francisco Salazar, all three judges scored the fight 120-108 in favor of Nietes—who's now 39-1-4 for his career.

Nietes entered this match as a heavy 13-100 favorite, per OddsShark.com. He had only lost one fight in 43 matches coming into his showdown with Sosa, and that was a split decision in 2004. The junior-flyweight sensation won each of his previous seven matches, so it's safe to say momentum was on his side.

Sosa was entering dangerous terrain, not dissimilar to when he was destroyed by Ramon Gonzalez before getting knocked out in the second round last year. He did rebound with a decision victory over Orlando Garcia Guerrero in February, but this was a huge step up in competition.

Moving up in weight for this match, Nietes explained that he wanted to make the move to flyweight for some time because he conquered the 108-pound division, per ESPN's Dan Rafael:

"

I was thinking he would be my last opponent at 108 pounds. I want to fight bigger names. I am very lucky to have a manager and promoter who believe in what I can do and they have always supported me. But I believe I'm done with the 108 division. There's no one else for me. I want to go after the other world champions out there. One world champion at a time, but I want to fight more if I can.

"

At 34 years old, Nietes' chances to be a dominating long-term flyweight champion don't bode well. But he was so good and dominant at 108 pounds for years that the only way for him to challenge himself at this stage of his career was to move up in weight.

Sosa was the perfect opponent for Nietes to get his feet wet as a flyweight. He's not a top-tier fighter but has built enough of a resume throughout his career for Nietes to get a better idea of what he can expect when better competition comes calling.
