Report: WWE Expresses Interest in Signing Hardy
Thursday, Sept. 22
According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Raj Giri of WrestlingInc.com), WWE is kicking the tires on signing Hardy once his TNA contract expires in spring 2017.
"With WWE there's the killer schedule, which probably isn't the best thing for him physically right now. Granted, if something happens to TNA, that equation changes, because he's loaded with ideas for his character, and he would need television to get them over."
The 41-year-old Hardy spent 12 years in WWE, with much of that time dedicated to the successful Hardy Boyz tag team with his brother—Jeff Hardy.
Matt has been a full-time TNA roster member since 2014, winning the TNA World Heavyweight Championship twice and the TNA World Tag Team Championship once during his stint.
Hardy underwent a complete character makeover earlier this year by becoming "Broken" Matt Hardy, which led to him attempting to "delete" his brother from existence before joining forces with him to feud with The Decay.
Matt's transformation led to a pair of viral segments for TNA dubbed The Final Deletion and Delete or Decay.
With Hardy making more waves as a singles performer than ever before, there is good reason for WWE to want to capitalize on his success.
It is unlikely that Hardy would have as much creative license in WWE as he does in TNA, though, which would make it difficult for him to fully carry his character over.
After the Dudley Boyz left following just one year back with the company, it stands to reason that WWE could be interested in signing both Matt and Jeff for a final Hardy Boyz run to help boost the up-and-coming tag team division on either Raw or SmackDown.
Matt is doing some of the most compelling work of his career, and regardless of how WWE would opt to utilize him, bringing in a veteran with his track record and mind for the business would be a major coup.
