Floyd Mayweather Jr. Comments on Potential Conor McGregor Fight
Floyd Mayweather Jr. is apparently moving on from Conor McGregor after the retired boxing superstar told FightHype.com this weekend he couldn't arrange a matchup with the UFC's featherweight champion:
"I tried to make the fight happen between me and [McGregor]," Mayweather said. "We wasn't able to make the fight happen, so we must move on."
Mayweather also told FightHype.com he is the reason, in his words, that other boxers are calling out McGregor.
McGregor said in August he was having Mayweather doing all he could to get him enough money to make fight happen.
"Right now, I have Floyd running around the Showtime [Network] offices gathering my money. That's what he's doing," McGregor said, per ESPN.com. "He's running around the Showtime offices, begging those executives to come up with the $100 million cash he needs to fight me. As soon as he gets my money, we can fight."
McGregor and Mayweather have been going back and forth virtually all year hyping this dream match between the biggest stars in boxing and mixed martial arts.
Mayweather stoked the fire on Twitter in May with this fake poster:
It's a testament to the drawing power of both fighters that they have kept this discussion going for so long.
McGregor has had a busy year, in addition to teasing a fight with Mayweather. He briefly "retired" from the UFC prior to UFC 200 in July, before returning and getting a win in his rematch with Nate Diaz last month.
With the UFC preparing for its first event at Madison Square Garden in November, UFC commentator Joe Rogan recently said on his podcast (via BJPenn.com) McGregor is rumored for a fight against Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight championship.
Mayweather has been retired since defeating Andre Berto last September. However, if the right offer comes along, perhaps Mayweather would consider a return.
