High School Football Teams Collaborate on Memorable Touchdown for Water Boy
Two high school football teams came together to produce a special moment for Robby Heil and his mother.
Heil, who has Down syndrome, usually works on the sideline as the Novi High School Wildcats' water boy while wearing No. 24. On Friday night, the senior stepped on the field to a thunderous ovation—and scored a touchdown.
Both sides celebrated the play, which occurred on an untimed down, and the opposing South Lyon East Cougars presented him with a jersey.
The moment surprised his mother, Debbie Heil, who has cancer. She discussed the unforgettable event with the Detroit News' David Goricki:
"It's incredible. Coach [Jeff] Burnside wanted to make this happen and he was able to talk with the South Lyon East coach and make this happen. To have an opponent come together and make this play happen, make him feel he's No. 1 on the team. I mean, did you see South Lyon East stand up and have banners of No. 24.
"
The camaraderie and compassion served as a heartwarming reminder that some things are far more important than the scoreboard.
