Deutsche Bank Championship 2016: Sunday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights
Another solid round has Paul Casey in the lead at the Deutsche Bank Championship at 15 under par, three strokes ahead of a jumbled leaderboard heading into the final round Monday.
Surprising names such as Brian Harman (12 under) and Smylie Kaufman (11 under) are also trying to do damage thanks to impressive performances Sunday.
Here is a look at the top of the leaderboard from TPC Boston:
The Deutsche Bank Championship is the second of four playoff events for the FedEx Cup, which will be decided in three weeks at the Tour Championship.
While 100 players were eligible for this event, only the top 70 in the standings will move on to the BMW Championship. While the top players are battling for first place, every stroke matters for everyone in the field.
This is good news for Casey, who will be looking for a rare win Monday, per Jason Sobel of ESPN.com:
After shooting rounds of 66 on each of the first two days, he notched yet another 66 on Sunday to put him at 15 under for the tournament. This shot on the 18th hole helped him extend the lead, via the PGA Tour:
If he stays in first place, he can jump from 59th in the FedEx Cup standings to fourth.
Kevin Chappell remains in good shape at 11 under, but he could've been even better if not for a disastrous 12th hole, via the PGA Tour:
Despite a double bogey on No. 12, he ended up with a 71 one day after shooting a 64.
Rory McIlroy was a big mover Sunday, posting an impressive 66 to get into the top 10. His best hole was his last one, where both he and Harris English almost scored albatrosses, as the PGA Tour showed:
They both settled for eagles to close out their rounds.
McIlroy got off to a terrible start in the tournament, as a triple bogey put him at four strokes over par through three holes Friday. Since then, he has turned things around, getting to nine under to head into the final day within striking distance of the lead.
Louis Oosthuizen saw the biggest jump on moving day thanks to his flawless round, per Rex Hoggard of Golf Channel:
He ended the day in a tie for seventh place, moving up 47 spots on the leaderboard.
Olympic gold medalist Justin Rose (nine under) and PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker (11 under) are also within a few strokes of the lead after Sunday.
Jason Day is further down the leaderboard, but he is in better shape than he was coming into the third round. The No. 1 player in the world shot a 68—his first round of the tournament in the 60s—to bring his overall score to four under.
As Day explained afterward, he spent a lot of time correcting his problems off the tee, per Cameron McDonough of NESN:
"I worked very hard leading up to just to try and get the driver straightened out. Between Rounds 2 and 3, worked hard again. There was only one kind of bad drive today, but for the most part everything else is coming around nicely. I kind of worked out what was going on, what was going wrong, and tried to change that up for today and it seemed like it worked out pretty good.
"
Despite his inconsistency down the stretch this season, the Australian came into the week in second place in the FedEx Cup standings, so he is in great shape regardless of the tournament's outcome. The key will be gaining some momentum heading into the next few weeks.
Jordan Spieth is in a similar range after shooting a 72 in the third round, dropping him to five under for the tournament. He's still in good shape in the overall standings, but he will need more consistency if he wants to win his second consecutive FedEx Cup title.
As for those on the bubble, Steve Stricker is one to watch. He entered the week in 97th place but is doing his best to qualify for the BMW Championship. He sits at eight under for the tournament, putting him in a tie for 11th place.
Harold Varner III and David Hearn, who sit at eight under as well, have also helped their cases, while Vijay Singh (three over) and Webb Simpson (one over) are on the outside looking in.
The Deutsche Bank Championship concludes Monday with early tee times adjusted to beat Tropical Storm Hermine, per Helen Ross of the PGA Tour's official website. With threesomes playing off split tees, the final round could be a quick one.
