Jordan Spieth at Deutsche Bank Championship 2016: Saturday Score and Reaction

Alec NathanSep 3, 2016

Jordan Spieth was dialed in Friday when he started his stint at the Deutsche Bank Championship at three under, and he followed up with a second-round showing of three under on Saturday to improve his standing at TPC Boston.

The two-time major champion is now nestled comfortably below the leaders at six under with moving day on the horizon.

Here's a look at how Spieth's day proceeded after he teed off on No. 10:

And here's an overview of the leaderboard, which features Brian Harman, David Hearn and Smylie Kaufman among a tightly packed group of top competitors entering Sunday's third round:

Spieth started his day on the back nine, and that figured to be good news for the world No. 3 after he carded birdies on Nos. 10 and 12 during first-round play.

And while he failed to convert birdie opportunities on his first three holes during Round 2, Spieth broke through with an impressive conversion on No. 13.

After his approach shot found the right rough, Spieth holed out from approximately 24 feet out thanks to a brilliant chip shot, as the PGA Tour documented on Twitter:

Spieth encountered trouble when he made bogey on No. 17 for his second back-nine slip-up of the week, but he rebounded on the par-five second with his second birdie of the day to move back to four under.

And the 23-year-old didn't stop there.

As the PGA Tour displayed on Twitter, Spieth proceeded to stick his tee shot on the par-three third within inches of the hole, and his climb up the leaderboard continued with a tap-in for birdie:

As was the case Friday, Spieth didn't let brief struggles throw a wrench into his round.

Thanks to that mental fortitude, he is now lurking just a few shots off the lead with a chance to propel himself up the leaderboard.

That's not too shabby for a guy who missed the cut at TPC Boston a year ago.

And now that he's fully recovered from his Masters collapse and an uncharacteristically shaky first half of the season, Spieth can take aim at a Deutsche Bank Championship title as he continues to build momentum and attempts to defend his 2015 FedEx Cup title with a late flurry of impressive finishes.

Post-Round Reaction

"I gave myself some pretty good looks from that 10-, 15-foot range," Spieth said of his round, per GolfChannel.com's Rex Hoggard. “Kind of like last week, they were a little off. I would under read one, over read the next on the same looking putt. So it's close, it's close to all clicking."

"I just didn't quite get them to go until right there on [No.] 9," Spieth added, per Hoggard. "My other birdies were a chip-in [a 24-footer at the 13th hole] and two tap-ins, so hopefully the one on nine springboards something in the weekend."
