Deutsche Bank Championship 2016: Friday Leaderboard Scores and Highlights

Tim DanielsSep 2, 2016

James Hahn and Ryan Moore both posted bogey-free rounds of 65 on Friday to seize the lead together at six under par following the first round of the 2016 Deutsche Bank Championship.

The leaders weren't able to generate much separation over the first 18 holes, though. Seventeen other golfers are within two shots of the lead as favorable scoring conditions in Norton, Massachusetts, have allowed players to start the second week of the FedEx Cup playoffs on a high note.

Here's a look at the leaderboard after Round 1 at TPC Boston:

Moore, who finished seventh last week at The Barclays and won the John Deere Classic earlier in August, stayed hot with his 12th sub-70 round in his last 13. He carded three birdies apiece on both sides of the course and gained 1.582 strokes on the greens.

The PGA Tour highlighted a shot that exemplified his strong round:

Justin Ray of Golf Channel provided more numbers from Moore's stretch of great play:

It's been a polar-opposite story for Hahn. He missed the cut in each of his last two starts, The Barclays and the Travelers Championship, and hasn't finished inside the top 40 since winning the Wells Fargo Championship in May.

His play Friday suggested he might be starting to find his swing again just in the nick of time. He finished the first round in fine fashion, posting four birdies on the front nine after starting on the back side, including a birdie on his final hole.

The PGA Tour spotlighted one of his approach shots, and his comment after striking the ball illustrated his confidence:

Paul Casey finds himself among the group that's one stroke behind the leaders after Round 1. It was an eventful day for the 13-time European Tour winner, who finished with eight birdies, seven pars and three bogeys.

Afterward, he talked about the weird feeling of playing in the event after missing out on the European Ryder Cup team, per Rex Hoggard of Golf Channel:

"

Not being a factor, not being part of whether I make the team or not this time around, you lose that churning in the stomach. I'll tell you right now, you wake up in the morning and you're in but not solid or you're just on the outside trying to make it or you've got no chance but you might be a pick, whatever the scenario, there's always a little churning in the stomach.

"

Based on Friday's play, perhaps the setback represented the motivation he needed.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Phil Mickelson likely played himself out of contention with a four-over 75. The score, which can be directly attributed to a quadruple bogey on the sixth, left him in a tie for 93rd place in a field of 97.

The PGA Tour showcased a few of his mistakes:

Ultimately, the conditions at TPC Boston left the door open for a boatload of red numbers Friday, but the course was tough enough to prevent anybody from going super low. It created a situation where a vast majority of the field is still alive heading into the second round.

Now the question is whether Saturday's round will create some separation. If it doesn't, the stage will be set for a wild finish over the tournament's final two days.
