WWE SmackDown: Potential Spoilers, Rumors, News and Preview for Aug. 30

Ryan DilbertAug 30, 2016

Animosity is set to boil over on WWE SmackDown.

Dean Ambrose and AJ Styles are sure to amp up their rivalry as they near their WWE World Championship match at the Backlash pay-per-view on Sept. 11. SmackDown general manager Daniel Bryan will respond to The Miz's scorching comments last week. And Nikki Bella has payback on her mind after Carmella's recent attacks.

The American Airlines Center in Dallas will host it all as WWE returns to Big D for the first time since the night after WrestleMania 32.

Last week, Bryan and blue-brand commissioner Shane McMahon announced the creation of two new titles: the SmackDown Women's Championship and the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. The former will be decided in a Six-Pack Challenge at Backlash. The latter title will go to the winners of a tournament that is already underway.

The chase for those straps will be among the many stories to watch as SmackDown unfolds.

Backstage reports, the SmackDown preview on WWE.com and local advertising offer hints of what's to come on Tuesday night. Team Blue's attempt to top Raw begins at 8 p.m. ET on the USA Network.

On Tap

Bryan will address The Miz's harsh criticisms in what is sure to be a tense confrontation.

On Talking Smack last Tuesday, Bryan called out The Miz for wrestling "like a coward." The intercontinental champion then blasted Bryan, creating a wave of buzz with a biting promo.

As announced on Monday's Raw, SmackDown's general manager will speak with The Miz about that moment.

It may not have been WWE's original plan to showcase the tension between Bryan and The Miz, but the press that the IC champ's words received likely inspired the company to find a way to harness that. With Bryan not medically cleared to compete, it will be interesting to see where WWE takes this angle.

News, Potential Spoilers

Faces from the past are poised to join the tag team tourney party. Even with Heath Slater and Rhyno joining forces, there are still only seven teams on the SmackDown roster.

Apparently, an eighth is coming from a previous era.

PWInsider's Mike Johnson reported, "Former WWF Tag Team champions The Headbangers are booked for this Tuesday's SmackDown." Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter also confirmed Mosh and Thrasher's return.

The Headbangers last competed for WWE in mid-2000.

Johnson also noted on PWInsider that advertising in Virginia lists Randy Orton vs. Bray Wyatt for Backlash, even though WWE has not officially announced that bout yet. That's a clear sign that this rivalry is heading for a PPV showdown.

John Cena should be around on Tuesday night, too.

There has been much speculation about his taking a hiatus in the near future. Cena left his "Never Give Up" wristband in the ring at SummerSlam in a seemingly symbolic gesture. He is expected to film the second season of American Grit at some point.

But his time away from the blue brand may not be happening just yet. James Caldwell of PWTorch noted that Cena is advertised for Tuesday's show in Dallas.

SmackDown Streaks

American Alpha remains undefeated in its new home.

Jason Jordan and Chad Gable knocked off Breezango to advance to the second round of the ongoing tournament to crown SmackDown's own tag team champs. According to their CageMatch.net profile, Gable and Jordan are now 4-0 since joining SmackDown.

WWE is likely to spotlight other teams in the tourney this week, but it's obvious that the company is high on American Alpha. They have been booked to be unbeatable up to now.

Baron Corbin's workload hasn't been nearly as robust as American Alpha's.

Per CageMatch.net, The Lone Wolf hasn't wrestled on the last three SmackDowns. His last bout for the blue brand came on Aug. 2, a loss in a Triple Threat contest.

WWE must make him more of a constant presence. It's hard to establish a new star if the audience is only getting glimpses of him. Fans need to see him running over opposition and the referee raising his hand in the air.

Wrestling truly is an "out of sight, out of mind" business.

Backlash Build

More first-round action is on the way as the tag team tournament rolls on. The Usos and American Alpha moved to the second round last week. The Hype Bros, Heath Slater and Rhyno and The Vaudevillains are expected to get their own shots to advance on Tuesday night.

Slater has more to lose than anyone else. For him to earn a SmackDown roster spot, he and Rhyno have to win the entire tourney.

WWE has a potentially stellar story here, should the underdog go on a Cinderella run.

After Wyatt interrupted and antagonized Orton last week, count on those two colliding in some fashion in Dallas. The WWE.com SmackDown preview stated, "A conflict between Wyatt and Randy Orton may be imminent and could threaten to burn the whole place down."

This burgeoning feud is great news for both men.

Wyatt has been in need of a rivalry for some time. Orton enemy Brock Lesnar is not only on the Raw brand but also likely won't appear on WWE TV for several months.

Ahead of the Six-Pack Challenge for the new SmackDown's Women's Championship, Nikki Bella and Carmella have started fighting early.

Carmella attacked the recently returned Superstar twice last Tuesday, first in the ring on SmackDown and then on Talking Smack.

It's not yet clear what was the catalyst for Carmella's shift in character. She will likely get a chance to explain her action on Tuesday's SmackDown. And Bella will be waiting to respond with closed fists.

The SmackDown preview asked, "Will Nikki be out for payback on The Princess of Staten Island?"

The marquee feud en route to Backlash is between Styles and Ambrose.

Styles made sure their WWE World Championship match at the PPV will remain a one-on-one affair. He bested Dolph Ziggler to prevent The Showoff from making it a Triple Threat bout.

Now it's time for WWE to hype Styles' chase for the gold. The company did well to sell Ziggler as a hungry, desperate challenger to Ambrose's title before SummerSlam. Styles has much more momentum, so presenting him as a viable threat to The Lunatic Fringe will be much easier.

SmackDown's plate is full with matches to set up and stories to continue. It will take some serious booking deftness to cram it all into two hours on Tuesday.
