Even Talladega Superspeedway was pumped with McDowell's win:
Like most road courses, Road America doesn't just stress speed. With almost no banks and a bevy of turns, drivers needed to practice cunning and patience as well to move up through the field.
Road America is one of the most daunting tracks, as it is 4.048 miles long and contains 14 turns, which is why Sunday's race was originally only 45 laps.
As the pole-sitter, Alex Tagliani led the first 10 laps before pitting and relinquishing the lead in order to refresh his tires and fuel.
However, he was able to retake the lead on Lap 17, and with a massive battle for second place behind him that included McDowell and Erik Jones, Tagliani built a lead of well over three seconds.
But once McDowell overtook Jones for second, he began cutting into Tagliani's advantage and passed him by Lap 24.
After pitting on Lap 29, McDowell lost the lead to Jones, but Tagliani was right on his tail. Getting inside of Jones on Turn 3, Tagliani took the lead by Turn 5, but McDowell nudged him off the track, forcing him to drop all the way back to 25th.
McDowell was able to hold the lead until the end, which included an overtime session of three extra laps, despite a serious charge by Brendan Gaughan, who had almost a full tank of gas and fresh tires.
In total, McDowell led exactly half of the race—24 of a possible 48 laps.
