Jordan Spieth Trounced by Scripps National Spelling Bee Co-Champ in War of Words

Vanessa de BeaumontAug 26, 2016

Former world No. 1 golfer Jordan Spieth knows his way around a zoysia-covered course.

When asked to spell the species of grass frequently found around the green, however, his talents considerably diminish.

It shouldn't be surprising then that the self-described "below average speller" more than met his match in Scripps National Spelling Bee co-champion Jairam Hathwar.

According to For the Win's Luke Kerr-Dineen, the 13-year-old was linked with his favorite athlete via Spieth's sponsor, AT&T.

But despite Hathwar's preference for the two-time major winner's play, he didn't grant him an easy game.

In fact, the only lenience that Spieth was afforded after being trounced in the spelling showdown was a single opportunity to redeem himself by sinking a 30-foot, uphill putt—ultimately, unsuccessful.

"It’s a good thing I can hit a golf ball well though," he remarked, "don’t need to spell well to do that."

After all, compared to "triskaidekaphobia," rattling off "PGA Tour" should be simple enough.
