Dez Bryant Comments on 'Madden 17' Player Rating: 'That Is an Insult'

Andrew GouldAug 23, 2016

It must be weird to learn your value through a video game.

Being reduced to a numerical rating can't be easy, so it's understandable for NFL players to not appreciate their Madden player ratings. Despite missing seven games last year, Dez Bryant still wants to be treated as a top-tier wide receiver.

In Madden NFL 17, set for release Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys star is rated a 90 out of 100. He's the eighth-highest graded wideout behind Antonio Brown (97), Julio Jones (96), Odell Beckham Jr. (93), A.J. Green (93), DeAndre Hopkins (93), Larry Fitzgerald (91) and Alshon Jeffery (91).

Per the Dallas Morning News' Jon Machota, Bryant discussed the assessment after Friday's preseason game.

"It is what it is," Bryant said. "We're just going to see what happens. Like I told Madden, they put me at 90, I'm not worried about that. That rating going to shoot up real quick, you best believe that."

He went on to playfully deride the mark:

"

I play Madden, I [expletive] love Madden. They would do me like that? Oh my God. That is an insult, like why would you do that to me? How much I love y'all. Like what? Not John Madden, because I love him. It's the [video game] developers.

"

A 90 seems more than fair for someone who registered 401 receiving yards and three touchdowns last year.

Well, EA Sports heard Bryant's complaints and provided a reason as to why his overall rating might be lower than the wideout would like:

Ultimately, Bryant made it known that he was just joking around:

If any star wideout has a legitimate gripe, it's Allen Robinson. The 22-year-old, who compiled 1,400 yards and 14 touchdowns in his second season, is rated below Bryant, Steve Smith Sr. and Golden Tate at 88.
