Olympic 2016 Medal Count: Tracking Final Tally, List of Winners and Results
Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge made good on his status as the favourite to win the gold in the men's marathon on Sunday, the final day of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Kipchoge finished ahead of Ethiopia's Feyisa Lilesa and Galen Rupp of the United States, the first marathon medal the USA has won in 12 years, per ABC News.
Russia predictably took the gold in the team all-around rhythmic gymnastics competition, and the USA rounded off their excellent Games with the men's basketball gold. Here's a look at the current tally:
Marathon
| Eliud Kipchoge (KEN) | Feyisa Lilesa (ETH) | Galen Rupp, USA |
Kipchoge left it late to take the gold in the men's marathon, leaving his companions behind in the final kilometers to finish with a time of two hours, eight minutes and 44 seconds.
He finished over a minute ahead of Lilesa, who in turn finished 11 seconds ahead of Rupp. The 30-year-old only recently made the transition to the marathon distance, and per ESPN The Magazine's Mina Kimes, he had an apt description for his transformation:
Kipchoge's win means Kenya took the double in this year's marathon, as compatriot Jemima Sumgong took the gold in the women's event.
Rhythmic Gymnastics
| Russia | Spain | Bulgaria |
Russia overcame a poor start to the all-around team final to beat Spain to the gold medal on Sunday, making up ground in the three clubs and two hoops. The team managed a score of 18.633, overtaking Spain, who had taken the lead after the ribbons.
Like Kenya in the marathon, Russia's team win means the nation sweeps the all-around competition, with Margarita Mamun winning the individual final.
Boxing
| Women's Middleweight | Claressa Shields (USA) | Nouchka Fontijn (NED) | Li Qian (CHN) and Dariga Shakimova (KAZ) |
| Men's Flyweight | Shakhobidin Zoirov (UZB) | Misha Aloian (RUS) | Jianguan Hu (CHN) and Yoel Segundo Finol (VEN) |
| Men's Light Welterweight | Fazliddin Gaibnazarov (UZB) | Lorenzo Sotomayor Collazo (AZE) | Vitaly Dunaytsev (RUS) and Artem Harutyunyan (GER) |
| Men's Super Heavyweight | Tony Yoka (FRA) | Joe Joyce (GBR) | Filip Hrgovic (CRO) and Ivan Dychko (KAZ) |
Four more boxing champions were crowned on the final day of the Olympics, but once again, controversy reigned. The final bout of the night between France's Tony Yoka and Great Britain's Joe Joyce produced one of the worst decisions of the Games, with the former winning the gold despite being out-worked and out-boxed for three rounds.
The Times' Ron Lewis was among the many furious with the decision:
Claressa Shields retained her women's middleweight title with a win over Nouchka Fontijn of the Netherlands, and Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan took the gold in the men's flyweight division over Russia's Mikhail Aloyan.
Uzbekistan's Fazliddin Gaibnazarov added to his nation's haul, beating Lorenzo Sotomayor Collazo of Azerbaijan for the light welterweight gold
Basketball
| USA | Serbia | Spain |
Tournament favourites USA cruised to the gold medal with a 96-66 win over Serbia in the gold medal game, putting their struggles from the midway point of the tournament firmly in the rearview mirror.
Star forward Kevin Durant lead the way with 24 points, and in the process, made some Olympic history, per ESPN Stats & Info:
Spain sunk some late free throws to beat Australia 89-88 for the bronze.
Cycling
| Nino Schurter (SWI) | JAroslav Kilhavy (CZE) | Nicolas Carlos Coloma (ESP) |
Switzerland's Nino Schurter dominated the field in the men's mountain bike race, finishing solo on the tough and technical course ahead of Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Czech Republic and Nicolas Carlos Coloma of Spain.
World road champion Peter Sagan stole the spotlight and seemed to be on his way to a surprising medal until he suffered a puncture that took him out of contention.
Handball
| Denmark | France | Germany |
Mikkel Hansen guided Denmark to an upset win over France, avenging their loss in the group stage and winning the gold 28-26.
The French side took the early lead before Hansen exploded with seven goals in the first half, giving Denmark a lead they would never relinquish. France threatened with a mini-run late, but the Danes held on for gold.
In the bronze medal match, Germany cruised to a 31-25 win over Poland.
Volleyball
| Brazil | Italy | USA |
Hosts Brazil ended the Games with another gold on the final day, as the men's volleyball team beat Italy in straight sets in the final. The Italians put up quite the fight, losing every set by three points or less, but ultimately, the favourites had just too much offence to deal with.
In the bronze medal match, the USA completed a fabulous comeback to beat Russia 3-2.
Wrestling
| Men's 65-kg | Soslan Ramonov (RUS) | Toghrul Asgarov (AZE) | Ikhtiyor Navruzov (UZB) and Frank Chamizo Marquez (ITA) | Men's 65-kg |
| Men's 97-kg | Kyle Frederick Snyder (USA) | Khetag Goziumov (AZE) | Mamed Ibragimov (UZB) and Albert Saritov (ROM) | Men's 97-kg |
Russia's Soslan Ramonov and Kyle Frederick Snyder of the USA bagged the final gold medals in the wrestling, winning the men's -65kg and men's -97kg divisions, respectively.
The former put on a clinic against Azerbaijan's Toghrul Asgarov, winning 11-0 in little over two minutes, while Snyder survived a tough final against Khetag Goziumov of Azerbaijan, winning 2-1.
